Biggest fixed blade you belt carry?

I have been looking at some large knives but am unsure if I will actually carry them due to weight and size.

What do you want that knife for? For fun, chopping, batoning, bush clearing? Just a large knife is just a large knife, not necessarily better than a small knife unless you want to use it for a specific task as chopping for instance. In that case you should get a chopper, not just a big knife. Despite all the good reviews on BK9 for instance, it is not a chopper, neither is a Swamp Rat 9 etc. If you use it for bush, branches etc, a machete may be a better choice, not just a big knife.

My favourite big knife is a custom made bowie, I think it is 12 inch long and 2.5 inches wide at least. It is cool to look at but I don't rally know what to do with it. It does not!! excel at any specific big knife task.

I'd have to disagree with this statement, the bk9 is actually a great chopper, I have other longer blades, kukris and machetes and it'll out chop all of em.

Hell the bk2 is also a great chopper for it's size. It's probably close to the best in <5" range.

Then I have to apologize, I considered the BK9 very similar to the Rodent9, a long, straight blade, and IMO the Rodent9 is not a good chopper, neither a good batoner!

On my hikes in the hills, I carry my Cold Steel Trailmaster in San Mai steel. It's a great all purpose knive.

I have no experience with the rodent 9, but the bk9 is excellent chopper imo. Even more so with a lil edge tweaking. You should give one a couple swings,

This is my regular carry. It's my "work knife" (construction), and my "away from work" knife. I carry it mostly in parts of urban San Diego. For work I use a kydex sheath for ease of cleaning, away from work it's the leather sheath. Overall length of the knife is 10".

I've been carrying this knife for several years without issue. Say what you may about California, but under state law we have the right to carry any size or type of fixed-blade as long as it's not concealed. :)

Sweet knife, what is that blade man?

It's a Wilson Tactical model 25 (same company that makes high-end 1911 pistols). Unfortunately the model 25 is long discontinued. In fact, I don't think Wilson makes fixed-blades any longer (each one was handmade to order). That's unfortunate as well because they made a variety of nice ones. Now Wilson produces knives under the name Wilson Combat.

The model 25 has a 5" blade (actually 5 and 1/4", but I just round it off). It's made of D2 steel, full-tang, almost 1/4" thick. micarta handles (which I wrap with bicycle innertube for increased grip).

I had to regrind the edge after receiving it because the original edge was too thick. I added the sharpening choil. And I ground the over sized lanyard loop off the butt end of the tang to reduce weight.

It's been my workhorse knife for almost a decade, lots of cutting, prying, chiseling, etc. And it's still going strong.

How'd you secure the inner tube rubber after you wrapped it....glue, tuck, melt...??

Whatever, you sure gave it a great look. I slid a bike inner tube section onto a BK-2 handle once but never tried to wrap like that. Unique.

Btw, the jacket looks very horsehide to me. Is it? I sure like mine.

And when I want something in between. 9.5" blade, 25oz

Ferahgo, (and anyone else who has handled one)

What do you think of that Buck chopper? I've been eyeing them for a little while now, but can't find much info or opinion on them.

As for the OP's question, my BK 4 or 9 get belt carried very rarely. I usually have my ESEE 3 or BK 15 or 16 on my belt and anything bigger goes in/on my pack.

I tuck the end under a few of the previous wraps. It takes a bit of practice, but once you figure it out it's easy.

A few of the benefits of wrapping is you can produce ridges that increase grip. You can also customize the shape of the handle by wrapping the rubber thicker in some areas than others. The handle of the model 25 was a bit to skinny for my tastes and a single overlapping wrap fixed that and made it perfect for my hand.

The jacket is cowhide. It's actually a motorcycle cop jacket (no, I'm not a cop). There's a company here in San Diego that makes leather motorcycle jackets for various police departments around the country, and they also sell to the public. I really liked the look of the jacket and the thick leather. About six years ago it saved the skin on my left arm from my wrist to my shoulder when I laid my bike down and took a slide down the street. I've been wearing it for many years and many miles, and it shows it.

Oh yeah Wilson Combat is amazing, my buddy has an XTAC. ..amazing pistol. I knew that blade o yers was something special! Damn I wish they still made that knife! All the good stuff just discontinued, the Busse War Boar...ugh

I definitely consider myself lucky that I got one. Too many times I missed out on a knife because I procrastinated too long and it was discontinued. I hate when that happens. But I learned my lesson. Now when I want a knife, if I can afford it, I don't hesitate.

Biggest knife I carry is 5-6" in the woods unless I am specifically planning on trail maintenance and in which case I take something longer like the Condor Pack Golok, Condor Puerto Rican machete, or Condor El Salvador machete. My latest has a 10" blade (Condor Kumunga) and I really like it, but I not have carried it in the woods yet. Been my around the house chopper so far. It carries like a machete, so I could see belt carrying it in the woods.

The only fixed blade I might carry in a "urban" environment is my Dozier Companion which has about a 3" wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blade in the Dozier horizontal sheath.

BlackJack M-125, usually in the colder months when I'm on the back 80ac., hunting, or just out in the woods generally. It's 9.5" overall - if I need something bigger than that, it's in my pack instead of on my belt!:

And often accompanied by a revolver and other accessories as well:

The biggest blade I regularly belt carry is my Spartan Harsey Difensa. I find it pretty easy to carry and quite useful when clearing brush and doing similar work. I find machetes too big to carry all the time while working.
