Biggest job with a multi-tool?

What is the biggest job/task you've ever taken on with just a multi-tool? I just moved into a new apartment and assembled a TV stand with my Leatherman Wave. The instructions called for a large and small phillips screwdriver, a large flat blade screwdriver, and a hammer. In addition I had no lights and was working with just the light from one window on a cloudy day. Thank God for this braille keyboard!

I'm sure other people can top this, but I built my last RC car using only my SOG Powerlock, and that was no small task.

Assembling and wiring 20 750 watt stage spotlights with my SOG Powerlock and Leatherman Supertool 200!

That was a chore!

I just recently installed a ceiling fan in my bedroom with just my Leatherman PST.

And two months ago I put in some lights under the cabinets in my kitchen with that same PST.

And I've used one for hundreds of little jobs around the house.

What I've learned about multi-tools is this:

1) It is'nt better than a dedicated tool specificly designed for the job, but it's the next best thing.

2) It saves you alot of trips back and forth to the tool-box. And this is really great when you're working up on a ladder.

3) If you use one very much, you'll soon want a bigger stronger one with more tools. I like the PST and the Gerber Pro-Scout but now I'm eyeing the Leatherman SuperTool or Wave (again!).

Good luck,
Allen.

I recently installed our new bench ( outdoors of our house ).
In most of the cases I used as a bottle opener.
I used the screwdrives opening the computers in order to fix it ( it is my work ).

Allen - The PST is hard to put down. I think that multitools are kind of like women. No other seems to compare to your first love. At least you always go back to your first multitool if you don't like your newer ones.:D

Buzz, you're right, but those non-locking screwdrivers do bug me sometimes. And I would really like a woodsaw on my multi-tool, especially if I'm carrying it in the woods.

Allen.

Sounds a little funny, but I used my SOG Paratool to clean dozens of steelhead salmon a couple of years ago. We were on a trip and my SOG had the sharpest blade. No filletting, but just getting the guts out before freezing.

I took my Wave to Afghanistan this summer and it was the most useful thing I had. I used every tool/blade in those two months. I fixed doors, installed hasps, opened cans, wallowed out holes, the list was endless. There was probably not a day that I didn't use it for something. And yes, those non-locking screwdrivers suck.

When I was 16 I had a job at Kaylor Fencing in Olathe Colorado. Strung up about 2 miles of barbwire fence each day on big 400 acre ranches. My Powerplier was able to handle all the job of fence-pliers with ease.

Now I have a Powerlock and I gave my Powerplier to my buddy who also builds fences now. My first one, a Paratool was given to my other pal when I was 14-15 he still carries it today. SOG is no BS, they last a long time and go through hard work.

I don't think I've ever done any big tasks with just a multitool, but they sure are good at reducing the amount of tools you have to buy.

I use my Gerber MP400 (Compact Sport) a lot, since it is of a reasonably small size and the sheath can hold the hex bit attachment along with six bits. This one always sits within arm's reach at my desk at home.

My Powerlock is huge and strong, but the size makes it a bit unwieldy for the small jobs. I carry this one EDC, since I'd rather it be clumsy overkill than find myself with a too-small tool (:D) when I need it.

No discussion of multitools is complete without discussing my most-often used one, the Leatherman Micra. It helps keep the nose hairs at bay... and that's the only thing I've used it for in the past 3 months or so. But I still use that sucker a lot.

I can do a number of repair jobs on washer's, dryers, stoves and refrigerators using nothing for tools but my Leatherman.
Many times if the customer is at home I carry my tool bag in just for show.
My Leatherman of choice for years was the wave, but know I'm using the Super Tool 200.

I bought a Letherman SideClip 1 or 1.5 weeks ago and I fixed 2 or 3 computers with this tool, opened 3 cans, and prepared some meals...

It is just what I need, it is compact easy to carry and it has the real tools that I need.

A few years ago my wife and I moved into a new house. Our first night in the place we got to bed after 2:00am, totally exhausted. Then we started hearing strange noises. Eventually we figured out that one of our cats had managed to sneak into the pedestal support under our waterbed while it was being assembled and had been trapped in there for at least half-a-day. She had been without water all that time. Her voice had given out after hours of crying and she could barely rasp, once we were finally within hearing distance.

The problem was that the pedestal lay under a fully-filled, and therefore unmovable, waterbed. Draining it to get her out would have taken at least four hours, since we didn't have a pump. And we were seriously worried about her health.

All of my tools were packed and at the old house, but I did have a Victorinox SwissTool X on my belt. That was enough. I used the chisel, with a work boot as a hammer, to create a hole large enough for the saw blade. Then I sawed a hold in the side of the pedestal large enough for the cat. She was dehydrated, hoarse, and miserable, but she did survive the experience.

She is now sixteen and still going strong.

Damn, does that mean I have to go back to using my bare hands?;)

Wow! Glad the cat made it.

Thank you!

Since I wrote that earlier today Kita went to the vet and was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. :(

She goes in for surgery Friday morning. We won't even know what her chances are until then.

Kita has always been a survivor. I am betting on her to survive this too, but any prayers and other positive thoughts would be appreciated. She is the first cat I ever had.
