Biggun design....

Very, very cool. I would love this in 5160. Nothing against A2, it's just that I prefer the spring steels in big choppers. Great design. What would be the price range for one in 5160 at 5/16"?

I love big knives. My only feed back is on the front swedge. I know that they are much more appealing to look at than a big flat spine. But, one thing that a big knife does really well is baton. The last 3 inches or so is what will always be taking the baton blows. The swedge just eats up batons. I personally would prefer not to have the false edge, swedge, whatever you want to call it.

All in all, a great design.

Hey Dan,

Just curious, in your picture thread you made a comment along the lines of "I don't want it too blade heavy." Can I ask why? It seems that forward weight = good chopping. I am wondering what the other trade off is?

Brian

briangandrews - It's been my experience with kukris and other choppers that "2 inches past the guard" is the threshold for balance on a knife. I've handled hundreds of these knives and the ones with the balance out past the 2" mark feel too blade heavy and cause fatigue.

So, on a chopper, that's what I'll be shooting for...putting the balance out as far as I can, without putting it past the 2" mark.

Lucky Bob - I use AutoCAD for the line drawings, and then paint them in Photoshop.

Ok guys....did some doodling with this design...and I don't know...just doesn't seem BIG enough...:D  :p

Take a look at these:

20", 22" and 24" respectively...

Well...whatcha think?!?

:D

Not sure Dan. I'm still awaiting a buyer for that kidney :p
Any guesstimates on the weight and final stock thickness or tapering?

Ok....did some 3D modeling and some analysis....now that the boys are in bed...:D

If we go with 3/8" (and look at the longest one = 24")

The weight will be around ~3 lbs (47.5oz) including handles and the balance point will be about 3 inches in front of the ring.

If we go with 5/16"

The weight will be around 2.5 lbs (40 oz) including handles and the balance point will be about 2.5 inches in front of the ring.

1/4" thickness would probably take us to 2" in front of the guard....but at this length/size....a half-inch is probably not worth the drop in strength from 5/16" to 1/4".

at 3/8" (48 oz)....it's 2 oz/in....which is pretty stout. The heftiest kukris were around that ratio.

at 5/16" (40 oz) it's 1.7 oz/in....which is more managable, yet still beefy enough.

For comparison's sake....a "fighter" kukri has a ratio of around 1.1-1.3 oz/in. A standard utility is 1.3-1.5 oz/in. And a hefty chopper would be 1.5-2.0 oz/in. Above 2.0 oz/in and it gets into that "sharpened prybar/boat anchor" category...:foot:

Here's another comparison.

My current WSK is 14 inches and 19-21 oz (depending on handle material)...or about 1.35-1.5 oz/in.

So, it will have about the same feel "in the hand" as a beefed-up WSK...just longer. :D

Because, it's been proven before...no need to get into it here....but weight to length ratio means a lot more than overall length or weight. A long skinny (but heavier) knife will feel lighter than a short thicker (but lighter) knife. It has to do with balance and perception.

So.....2.5 lbs sounds like a lot for a knife...until you spread it out over 24 inches...then it becomes more managable.

Great info! Thanks Dan.

definitely a possibility....

BRAMEL - I like the way you think, bro! :D  :p

What ever happened to these???

I'm interested in a 24" model.

Sounds good to me!

I got a taker on the 18 incher...I'll cut a 24 incher too...we'll see what happens.
