Firstly, it's a binocular. Singular not plural. Not a pair (or set) of binoculars unless you are considering two binoculars. These days more and more often used incorrectly in the plural.
Secondly, and most importantly, the best place to get advice on a binocular is a birding site/forum. No different than a guy on a birding site asking advice on a knife being directed to a knife site/forum.
Funny. I made that mistake in my post earlier. I don't know how, because I agree with you on the singular/plural issue.
Hunting sites are also good for binocular reviews and recommendations. I have to say that I love my 6x30 Leupold Yosemite binoculars for general use rather than uses that require high power. Yep... plural again.... common usage. I use them woods hunting, kayaking, and just bumming around in the woods. My 8x Nikon Monarchs are very good for the money too. Like an earlier post mentioned, I try to stay away from even 10x magnification unless I know I will need it. I tried the real compacts and totally dislike using them although they are handy to carry and you might not carry a larger pair if you are concerned about weight.
