binoculars

The Steiners are available for good prices, also now Brigade Quarter master has clearance on Leupolds Wild Rivers (made in Asia)- 8X42 for $158, how does Leupold compare to Steiner?
Thank you,
Martin

I just followed my good friend Hoodoo's recommendation and ordered the Brunton Eterna 8x25 Compacts. Lots of good features in an eminently packable size for taking along in the field.

Minis:
Pentax 8x22 mini

Mid:
Canon 8x23wp

Big:
Pentax 8x42dcf-wp

Cannot say enough good about Pentax. I agree with the referral to Better View Desired! They too put the Pentax as a best buy and it is THE ONLY PHASE CORRECTED ROOF PRISM THAT CAN BE HAD UNDER $500!!!!! When I lived in Atlanta Bass Pro shops had the Leicas, Zeiss, Swarovskis, and Pentax . . . a clerk walked out with me to compare them (About $4K worth of Glass!) Neither he or I could tell the difference between them other than the price. Hard to beat!:D :D

I am a big fan of the Stieners, but have went to the Zeiss 8X30, the constant focus kind - set them once and they stay focused from 23' out to inifinity. If you find a pair buy them, but they are very hard to come by.

Cabela has the 8X30 Zeiss Classic Series on sale for $699, this is great deal on great binos.

Old saying about optics: "Good optics cost nothing and weigh less."

The best prices anywhere on factory refurbs and trade-ins, and they are great people to deal with:

For me, it is a balance between size and optical quality. The lighter the binoculars are, the more I have them on me for hiking/ camping/ sightseeing. I have large high quality Pentax Binoculars (8x32) but they are heavy and I rarely take them on multi-day hikes. I now carry light weight, non-waterproof Nikons (8x23). They are light and have reasonable good optics/ brightness. And most importantly, they are always with me for identifying bird and mammals at a distance.

Peter,
One of the things that sold me on the Steiner 8x30 binoculars was the light weight, particularly when compared to my Nikon 10x25 Sportstar II binoculars. Both are great, and the Steiners are bulkier, but they are the ones I usually take if I'm going to be walking and doing alot of glassing. The Nikons pack smaller though.

Nikon 8 x 40 Monarch ATB's are the best I have used. They work fantastically at dawn and dusk. They collect light incredibly and are waterproof, shockproof and have a rubber armor coated body. They are decently priced at about $400. :D
