Do you think wider field of view or higher magnification would be more advantageous for your applications? As I mentioned above, the magnification is more important to me when looking at small birds (or mountain hunting) so I prefer the ten power. For sporting events, lower magnification and wider field of view would likely be my preference. Of course, that assumes you can hold them equally steady. I'm guessing that's no problem since you tried both in a store.

Nikon waterfproof travelites for me

That's fabulous - a waterproof Nikon Travelite EX,
I am jealous....

Just doing a bit of searching I see that the Nikon Travelite EX (note the "EX" designation) been available in the UK since August 2005 (? announcement was dated April 2006?) -
it's just not available in the USA - only the regular non-waterproof version.

I wonder why?
