A dear friend has asked me to make him a bird and trout knife, which I am happy to do. He is a bird hunter and an expert fly fisherman. I am neither.

I've looked up some pictures of B/T knives, some of which have longish handles with a narrow handle that ends in a circle of steel. He is more of a traditionalist, so I'd be inclined to keep to basics.

So just what constitutes a bird and trout knife? Those of you who hunt and fish might have some ideas of a knife that has real utility and does the job of gutting birds and fish (I guess). What steel? How thick? Pictures or links appreciated.

The main thing you need to keep in mind is it has to be samll. A thin blade around 3 inches is good. It will be used on small game so it needs to be small. Aside from this a drop point, spear point, clp point, I have seen lots of variations on the bird and trout knives.
I hope this helps some

I have a favorite little western, stainless, stag, and 3.5 clip point. have used and loved it for 30 years. I will take a pic if you like.

Here's hunter caper set. The Caper on the left could easily be considered a bird and trout.

Anything small with a fine point will work fine.

Phil,

If I remember right it is about 3.5 inches long, maybe a little shorter. Made that one a few yrs ago.
