What exactly is the bird hook for? I love dove hunting, but can't think of what the hook is for. Perhaps its for larger birds like turkey? I have no experience with turkey hunting.

I'm sure several of you will know what it's for. Do any of you use them?

Gutting smaller birds like quail and dove. You make a small incision on the breast between the muscles, insert spin a few times like you were eating spagetti and out will come almost all of the internal organs. Helps the birds cool faster in the field and is also nice for cooking if you aren't boning the birds.

Interesting.. I have always just ripped the skinned breast off the bird with my thumb after twisting off the wings.

I remember being disappointed that a knife wasn't necessary when I was taught how to do this.

Moving to W&SS for further discussion of technique.

This is how I was taught also. We step on the wings as we do this, pull on the legs and that removes most of the guts. Reach in there with your fingers and just yank that breast right off!

+2, but I use some game shears to clip the wings of the breast.

Thanks, for asking this question. I have always wondered the use of the hook.
