Bird Hunting

I haven't really given the quail a good chase this year, but I did shoot a few from the bow blind this past weekend.

A nice photo of a Scalie as known here. In Texas my Dad called them Blues. They give dogs fits as they won't hold for a dog to point. They run. Still, a challenging bird to hunt.
Thank you Casey. DM

Here's our supper. Made by the hand of a true Southern lady. Baked quail, brown rice, steamed veggies, home made biscuits and homemade butter. DM

Terrific photo's Casey!

David, that looks like a great dinner, got some in the refrigerator right now - you've got me inspired! OH

Great! We're headed your way for supper. Haa. The Gambel are large and rich in flavor. Bobwhites have a good flavor too. Sounds like you'll come straight home for supper too. DM

yum. now that looks good. wishing i ate that well last night.

jbm, thanks. I don't mind telling you,--- my girl fixed another round of it tonight for supper. When I saw what was being set on the table, I went and locked the front door. Just in case some neighbors showed up. It was just as good the 2nd time as the first. I think I need to take my dog quail hunting this weekend. DM :)

The part of the country where I live, its just not suited for much bird hunting other than turkey. I really enjoy seeing the bird hunting pics and the knives, dogs, and shotguns that go along with it.

jec, thanks. Where I grew up in East Texas we had Mourning Doves. It was rare I ever saw a White wing or any other doves. Then working at it I could take some Bobwhites, Woodcock, Rails and ducks during the year. Even a goose or two. All a great adventure. In the SW I get to shoot 4 varieties of doves, 2 different quail, Spruce Grouse, geese and Sand hill Cranes. And the Merriam's turkey, a large bird. So, I really enjoy getting out with my dog. DM

Unlock the door David, We will be over this evening for that some of homemade goodness.:D

I used to hunt pheasants when I lived in Iowa. Great way to spend the day. Even if I didn't see a one. (no dog)

Fixed quail and rice for dinner tonight, enjoyed by all here. The birds were fresh from Monday's hunt. OH

I used to live for grouse hunting, then moved to a city and got a little lazy, I've only been out turkey hunting since.

I even got a German Shorthaired Pointer when we moved. It's a shame she's never hunted, but we spend a lot of time in the forest, skijoring, canoeing, and the like so I can't feel too bad for her. Plus, I've never hunted with a dog before and I think I'd be too nervous taking her out now, I don't think she's disciplined enough although she's got a great nose and can go all day. Great breed but a lot of work.

Hunter, that gravy looks delicious.
Darkera, we raised a litter of German Shorthaired Pointers. They are temperamental. A one man type dog. Highly intelligent and high energy. But devoted to that person. DM

fishhunter, right you are. A bird dog is not for everyone. But everyone can enjoy bird hunting. Sometimes my dog makes me embarrassed when I miss a bird she pointed. DM

David, you always start the best conversations!I'm a big hunter for ducks, geese, pheasants and partridge,we don't have any other birds here in nova scotia other than those .I have a special nova scotia duck toller for hunting, she is awesome at retrieving and tolling in ducks, and after those seasons end she loves finding deer antler sheds. She is having a litter of pups as we speak,5 sor far and more to come!I can text any knife pics and dog pic anyone would like to see,9027404595.ive given up on trying to add pics to this sight, something always prevents the uploads and we cnt determine the cause. You live in a great place DM!

Razor, thank you. I thought you may have Grouse in your area. We have Spruce Grouse in the mountains here. A dog that finds antlers is a money maker. I'm glad you brought this up. My dog will find sheds and those fetch 9-10$ a lb. here. It doesn't take a lot before you have 25 lbs.. Then I take them to the antler buyer and convert it to cash. This will pay for a years supply of feed. Something to get out and work on this month. It gives me and my dog some exercise and pocket jingle. Deer tend to go to the same area to shed their antlers. I'll text you to see a photo of your new puppies. Perhaps you've collected a string of duck bands through the years? DM
