I set up an arapuca in our dog kennel to catch some of the dove coming in to eat our goat food. It worked but my son got a little enthusiastic, so did our goat...

Thank you Mac/Pict/Colhane. Interesting and enjoyable.

From a hunter's point of view, it is a pity that trapping wild birds and animals is illegal in Brazil. In fact I'm surprised. But I wouldn't be surprised if some of the locals simply trapped anyway despite the rules. It would be hard to change the culture of countless generations. It would be tough for me to live in a 'no-hunting' environment.

Coote,

I can assure you that trapping is alive and well despite the law. Brazil has a huge, poor rural population and the laws reflect this somewhat. For instance if you fish with a rod and reel you have to have a liscence. If you fish with a cane pole and line you don't. It restricts sport fisherman but lets the little guy feed his kids. Subsistance hunting is officially banned but unofficially winked at, in areas where it takes place they can't enforce ti anyway.

The arapuca is a trap that comes from the live bird trade. Brazilians are really into their caged birds and many rural people would suppliment their income selling exotic birds. That is officially illegal now but every home you visit in rural Brazil has a half dozen birds hanging from the porch chirping away. If the "Policia Florestal" ever show up they have a habit of opening all the cages and giving a good verbal harangue. If they catch you selling live birds it's another story. I knew a guy who even had a pet toucan. Mac

Mac you have a great boy, Dan sometimes it helps to listen to the oldman. but maybe you learned from the goof, anyways now you can trap him again:) thanks for the vid Mac. Pat

Pat,

There was some editing done to preserve Dan. He really, really wanted that bird. He did laugh when he saw the video so he's recovered. That was his first time taking a bird out of a trap so it was a learning experience for him. His big revelation?

"Dad, their feathers pull out!"

I guess everyone has to learn that somehow. Mac

I'm glad the policia take the practical, and compassionate, viewpoint.

Thanks again for the videos. I thought I had the arapuca sussed, but until I saw your earlier video on how to make one, I hadn't realized how clever and simple the cage construction was.

I now have broadband and a new iMac 'puter (as compared to my old steam-powered dial-up). I look forward to seeing more interesting movies.

Good on yer..... Coote in New Zealand.

Coote,

Seriously you have to make some possum snaring vids. Snaring is not legal in many places so its hard to get solid practice in. Mac
