Bird & Trout Knife Recommendations

A bird and trout knife is typically a small fixed blade with a thin steel. Just about any will do that fit this. People also use the same knives for deer hunting and small game hunting as it is generally all the knife you need.

Go look in the knife makers for sell forum.
The makers here produce some great pieces at reasonable prices.

Absolutely. Alan Warren had one up recently that was drop dead gorgeous. You can see his version on his website.

Keep your eye on the Maker's Exchange and you'll soon spot something that trips your trigger.

Just got this one from Daniel Rhode,
Best slicer I've used so far...

Design seems to work alright on birds:

I had two extremely experienced fly rodders in the shop watching me build some knives. Between them they had fished literally all over the world. They each have one and together nicknamed this design the "Trout Zipper".

North Arm Knives has posted a bird n trout in the seller's forum that seems like a great value. They call it the Mallard. S35vn with g10 scales at a great price. Been meaning to pick one up and give it a try.

Wow. Just went to their web page. That knife could be a real steal.

I bought two... the paring and the mallard. Only difference is the mallard has a lanyard hole and a kydex sheath. Both of mine have the cnc finish because the smooth versions were backordered and more expensive. I have never used a better paring knife. Fit and finish is great and it was a steal for two knives. It cuts like a laser and the mallard will be a food prep knife for future adventures in the BWCA. I highly recommend them.

Bark River is good quality. Thin. Another I've used, even on large game like deer and elk is the Tops Knives Bird and Trout.

A paring knife is essentially a bird & trout knife unless you are a commercial fisherman or work in a meat processing plant. So, choose based on this and you'll be fine. You want inexpensive? Lots of choices that work. You want more expensive? A particular steel? You want something hand made? Lots of choices and there is a knife for just about any budget that will work very well.

I have quite a few small thin fixed blades that work just fine (hand made and otherwise). On the production side of the coin, my bird & Trout is a the Nomad made by Bark River.

Hi 22
I'm not sure why my post was highlighted... I'm not OP and I certainly know the similarities between an paring knife and a bird and trout. ;) Someone had mentioned the North Arm knife and my post was just to give s little feedback on those models. Cheers and happy thanksgiving!

You were quoted because he's in agreement with your post. As am I. I got a North Arm Trilium earlier this year and it is an amazing knife for the money.

Willy, I liked the point you made and I just put a little more emphasis to it. I might add that my latest paring or kitchen utility knife is the Pioneer Woman brand sold by WM. Cost a big $7. I like them so far. Haven't resharpened yet however. Time will tell.
