Birds eye pivot or straight pin ?

As I'm prepping myself for an upcoming slippy build I have a couple questions.
It will have g10 liners with paper micarta on top.

Questions are...
Does a birds eye pivot get peened?
If so do I taper the bigger 1/4 washer so that I can peen into it to sand it flush?

If I just use a pin and not a birds eye, will the paper micarta be tuff enough to take it?
If so I'm sure I will need to taper the micarta to accept the peening?

About how far down the hole will I need to taper?
I'm thinking maybe 1/4 of the hole???

I definetly want to sand them flush with the scales and want a clean look.
I will be using 3/32 nickel silver rods.
I will also Not be using washers if I can find a way to relieve around the pivot of the g10 liners.

Thanks

How thick are the washers you are using? I would taper them and peen the pin to give it some holding power. Depth of taper will depend on how thick your washers are, but you want to make sure that after grinding flush that you have some peened pin left to hold the knife together.

I do my G10 handled slips with just a 1/8" pin and no washer, and they hold up fine. Micarta should be about the same, but a washer does add some durability.
As for the relief of the inside of the liners, I'd just get an appropriately sized end mill and take some light passes on a drill press if you're just doing micarta, as it cuts pretty easily.

Get a flat piece of plate, drill a blind hole and stick a 3/32 pin in it (or whatever your pivot size is) to rotate your handle scale on. Clamp the plate to your drill press table and offset the pivot about 1/8" off the periphery of your end mill. Plunge about .005 to .010" down and rotate the scale for your relief.

Actually, here's a pretty good tutorial by Tony Bose:

Same idea...

What about the spring bar pivot pin hole and the rear fixed pin hole
Should they also be tapered in the micarta?
If so how far down the hole to taper?
I feel if I go to where the spring bar pivots it will get slop.

Also are you tapering your jokes in your g10 handles and sanding them flush?

I use anywhere from 1/8" to 3/16" thick G10, so I'll normally taper about 1/16" to 3/32" deep or so using a tapered pin reamer.

I taper and peen all pins and grind flush ater. You really don't need a lot, but you want enough that after you peen and grind flush, there's still plenty of material to keep from pulling through.
