Birdyes

Excellent pics people... Vassili, I love the bird eyes!

We have a birds nest in out garage - I keep the outer door open for the dogs & one year these little brown birds (finch? Sparrows?) made their nest on a wire bin over our washing machine. They come back every year - they have about 3 little chics in the nest right now...

I'm about to redo that whole door / doorway with a doggie door. It won't be for a couple of months so I won't be disturbing the little birdies but I am going to have to move their nest. I'm considering buying a little birdhouse on a pole & putting it up by the doorway - transfering the nest there so they don't loose their little summer home. ...Guess I'm a total sucker for animals

I've also got a small family of squirels living in a section of my attic. They aren't doing any damage & its seperated from the rest of the attic (a false window peak above the garage). So I let them be - the currect occupant was a baby 2 years ago & will sometimes come out & do a little dance for me on the roof when I'm throwing the toy for the dogs in the front yard. He's really cute...

I need to get my digital camera set up & take some shots! Thanks fdor the inspiration!!!

Awesome James,
Hope to see pics of the youngins

Here's a few shots of a big barn owl that was in my front yard

IT was a pretty good sized one, almost mature I think, at about 15-20" tall. Really smart and curious bird, it watched me wherever I went with the camera.

ps, anyone know what that little yellow bird is?

Hi Mordachai, I believe that's actually a Barred Owl you got there. You will likely hear it calling at night. In case you are not familiar with it, the mnemonic is "Who-cooks-for-you.......who-cooks-for-you-all". The last syllable is drawn out a bit and descends. Very distinctive when you hear it.

Edit: Found this MP3 of Barred Owl.

As for your other bird, I don't know what it is. Your guess of a warbler of some type is a good one. Those are beautifully clear pics, but I sure don't recognize the species. It could be a female or juvenile, they are harder to figure out sometimes. The white eye ring reminds me of the Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, which we get migrating through up north. But they are much more olive above and darker below. I assume from your other post that you live in Florida too. Do you remember what time of year you took the pics?

Hey thanks for letting me know what birds I'm looking at. That audio link is awesome, and yeah I do hear that call at night as well as the whippoorwill and chucks-wills-widow calls. I also have little owls around, but they are really hard to photgraph at night. I think they are little owls or schreech owls, not sure though.

I took those pictures of that yellow bird on october 14th of 2004, so just about the start of fall/winter down here. And yes I am in Florida too. Mabye it was down here for the nice weather! The little guy had hit my big picture window(as many birds do) and was just sitting there dazed for a while. IT allowed me to take a lot of good pics. It did fly off all of a sudden though and seemed to fly alright. Alot of the birds that hit that window die right away though :( but it has allowed me to get really close to a few birds before they've taken off.

Here's another one who hit the window, but made it(actually this guy didn't stay around long) I think it's a catbird, but again, not too sure.

A pair of Honney Eaters on the Farm
Thanks for the international flavor. I looked those up to learn something about them. One source said that there are 73 species of honey eaters in Australia. I see that they have that downcurved bill, which looks like it is adapted to slurping nectar out of flowers.

Does that dish have plain water or do you put out a feeding solution?

Tarsier, the honey eaters are a really nice little bird, extremely friendly and inteligent. I make up a honey and water mix for them, and they love it.
The little buggers will swoop at me when there is no honey water in their bowl, not aggressively, just letting me know that the bowl is empty and that they are hungry.

Not a bird, but another one of my mates on the farm.

roughedges just pointed out this thread to me. (Thanks, RE!)

It would be unseemly for me to show my pics, here. I just want to say that you all are doing great. Thanks for showing them, and keep 'em coming.

All you guys are taking some really beautiful photos and for that it takes a lot of patience, a lot of skill, and probably a lot of throwaways. So with all that said please don't take offense if I ask the model and brand of the cameras you are using. (Really don't mean to hijack this thread but I'm burning with curiosity.)

My present set-up is a Canon EOS-1N with lots of quality lenses and accessories. Got lots of great photos with it but I really want to go digital.

digdeep,

For nature photography, I use a camera called a Canon EOS 1Ds MarkII.

Cheers,

Mike

digdeep:
I used an olympus c-755 for all the photos I posted in this thread. it is a mid range (maybe lower now!) digital camera- I have my eye out for a good deal on a digital or film slr though.

the olympus is a good camera, pretty easy to change shutter speed and f-stop (or the digital equivalent of both, really) quickly. Although...I use auto settings alot- they work well in the majority of situations. The only two photos I posted here that were taken with manual settings are the ones of the juvenile anhinga and the baby green herons.

everyone, evolute is too humble to post it here (and I hope I don't upset him for saying it myself!) but anyone who has enjoyed the photos in this thread should seriously click on the link he has in his profile. Truly impeccable photography.

Evolute, those are some incredible shots you've taken. I don't know exactly what it is about your pictures, but some have a magical quality to them. Just wondering, By any chance would some of the scenery pics taken in Cali (or west coat)?

As for the camera I'm using. It's almost a shame I still am using it. IT's a sony mavica FD-75. Yes that's right it's the .33 Mega pixel(yes that's right .33) that puts the pictures on a 1.4 Mb floppy. Yeah, to say the least it's old. But it does have incredible optics which almost make up for the low rez. It translates to fuzzy long-range pictures with lots of 'noise' while at the same time taking some of the most incredible macros!

I hope to have a real camera (SLR) by the end of the year, but I'll keep this one dedicated for macros!!
