Birthday hike with the BK12

Birthday Mike on a birthday hike! And it looks like, you need SpicroMikes! Haha look at how clever I am rhyming and such. Happy birthday brother. Looks like you had a really cool day to yourself there. Gorgeous scenery. That ice makes me very jealous. Going through a mini tropical heatwave here. I'm literally slipping over in my own sweat. I actually went for a swim in a swollen creek after the storm this arv just to cool down. Stoopid, I know, but Jeebers H. Crikes it's hot here.. It's a shame you couldn't get a little respite from the wind to cook up a tea but hey, you got outdoors and that's what counts. Best wishes my brother..

Great pics. Thanks for taking us along. I miss weather like that. Happy birthday GSOM!

Happy belated birthday, GSOM! Like you, I don't work on my birthday. I tell work, it's my birthday, so I won't be coming in. Mind you, I give them quite a bit of notice.

Seriously, I have a hard time with the heat. Saw a few people along the way and all of them were looking at my shorts like, "WTF are you wearing shorts for? It's February, you idjit!". I go by the temp, not the month or the season. Though I am usually in shorts from late march thru mid-December here....WAY too much northern European heritage in my blood (my mom is from Germany, dad descended from Scots, Poles and Romanians) to be comfortable in the heat and humidity.

Doc

Thank you, gentlemen. Doc - I did give the boss advance notice....but my job is flexible enough that 2 weeks notice is more than sufficient, as long as it's not a major holiday that everyone is trying to take off.

Kraut Scot! You've got the same heritage (somewhat) as I do! If you ever decide to venture to our colony, do yourself a favor mate and try avoiding coming anywhere between late August and late July. It's just a freakin' sauna here.. Anyway Mike, glad you had a good birthday bud. You're a cucumber. As in cool as a..

Yo man!! sorry I missed this, happy birthday!!!

I got to get up that way and do mt major with you... or maybe we take 3 days and do the presidential range ;-)

Thanks! The Presidentials sound great.....but I'd need a whole lot more fitness to do that....hell, I'm still a little sore from Monday, and it's almost Friday.

Some nice pics and great write-up, GSOM. Thanks for sharing, and happy birthday, of course...

Thanks, G.

What color are the scales on your 12?they look brown. I love my 12

They are the standard Ka-Bar Micarta, though the are starting to darken up a little from use. Great addition to an already excellent blade.....and the weight of them makes up for having to take out the brass weights - uh, personal balance system - that don't fit under them. Just got another 12 in the mail today....gonna have to pirate some Micarta off another one of my Beckers or find another set somewhere......

Beautiful area GSOM, thanks for taking us along. Oh yea, Happy Birthday
Happy belated GSOM!

Thanks, gentlemen.

Happy belated.
Looks like a great day.
We need to get together sometime before the warmer weather sets in and do one together.

that's why I said 3 days, most do it in one, I'm not trying to kill us :D

At a minimum of 23 miles and more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain, I don't know any regular Joes who can do it in a day.....at least not the regular kind of day where you sleep during some part of it.....

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing. Was that the 12 off the exchange? Thats one of those knives ya just cant pass up.

You're welcome.....and no, that was one I got a couple years ago, shortly after my first Gathering - when geektechnica was kind enough to let me handle his 12, and I knew I had to have one. The one from the Exchange just arrived yesterday, and is in it's native state: coated, Grivory scales, weights....it'll still end up as a user....I really love the 12. It's one of the few Beckers I felt the need to purchase a duplicate of....the others being the 15 and 16. All the other duplicates I have were GAW's or Gathering/Ka-Bar gifts. The 12 is just so good....

Great. Now I want to go hiking. The weather out here suck for that too. :D

I do like the 12 quite a bit. I am just at the 9 and 14 for now.

Hey, it'll come. You don't have to get them all at once....hell, I'll even be blasphemous and say you don't have to get 'em all. But the 12 is worth consideration, IMO. Seems like some of Ethan's best knives are collaborations that add the best of a couple different viewpoints and design/use theories. Think, BK5, BK15, BK14/24, BK12....and BK21. Distinctly Becker, but with something extra.

The 9 and the 14 will take care of 95% of the tasks you might ask of them. And the other 5% they can still do.....

I hope you get out and do a little walkabout. It's good for the soul. Church of the open sky - always open, TOTALLY non-denominational. Available to all who step out of doors and open their eyes.

Happy belated Bday Mike!

Awesome photos brother! looks like an awesome hike!
