birthday present for 8 year old daughter?

I hate to say it, because I do believe that every woman should own, at least, one good knife and, at least, one good gun, eventually. But, at 8, she'd probably appreciate a Barbie more.

An 8 year old boy, no problem, an 8 year old girl....go with the girly stuff.

My sister is only 10, and just from seeing me clean, play and sort my knives she has taken an interest in them. She likes to test them for sharpness on paper and learning how to open and close them.

Someone suggested a pink Manix 2, I'll just like to point out that my sister isn't able to unlock the blade, she also has a little trouble closing any other locking blade. I would suggest you show you're daughter the different knives you have and see which one is easier for her to open and close. But like other's have suggested, at age 8, a non locking blade, or an Opinel might be the best choice.

excellent suggestion...my youngest daughter who has small hands struggles with some liner locks and that can be downright dangerous.

Hello folks,
I was hoping you'd help me out a little bit here.

My daughter will be turning 8 this winter, and I want her to have a knife.

It would be easy enough to give her a hand me down, (since I have a 'few' extra knives kicking around) but she's really into pink and none of my knives are pink. Besides, I want her to have her own knife.

If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear your suggestions, or any advice you'd care to impart.

Thanks in advance for your time!
:)

Instead of surprising her with one, why not include her in the entire selection process? Look at some pics online together and let her choose the one she likes best...

ZT0560 or Spyderco Tuff. She'll only be 8 once so get her one of the most anticipated folders of her 8th year.

man, there are some great suggestions here, thanks so much!
Opinel seems like a great choice, I hadn't considered it.

If she likes animals SAK has four new classics out this year. Patterns are: Tiger, Zebra, Giraffe, and Leopard. I think the suggestion to let her pick out a knife is a good one. She will have ownership in her gift. Get her something girly too.

Pink Delica or Pink SAK, maybe a baliyo pen, get her a kalishnikov kitty Tshirt too.

Pink Spyderco Delica, Native, or Squeak.
If you got her a little Spyderco Ladybug(maybe too small bit if you do, I say purple) you could get a Pink Kydex Neck Sheath for it. Then she would have what I call little princess colors(purple and pink).
Spyderco Tattoo Dragonfly is also a really "pretty" option and the overall handling of the knife is just great(as is the native), the choil really helps too.
Any of these would appeal to a little girl and back locks or no locks are pretty simple, though I would go for locking if she uses it that way she doesn't accidentally close it on her little fingers.
Or you could always pick up the Tattoo Dragonfly and Tattoo Ladybug. Get the neck sheath for the ladybug and she can carry that one around her neck as she carries her little Dragonfly in her pocket. =]

She is just a little girl so I would not say anything too big. My little cousin is 15 and even her hands are way too small for say, a Spyderco Manix 2(she wouldn't be able to close it anyways) or ZT 0560(it's huge). If you want big, maybe look at the Spyderco Pink Chinese Lum, simple liner lock.

I'm thinking a really good bet would be a Kershaw Pink Leek, Scallion, Or Chive. They have the "Cool and fast" assisted opening, they aren't very big, have a simple liner lock, and are backed by the best warranty in the business.
