Birthday Tribute

I remember reading the forums and someone would mention they had dozens of HI blades and I'd think, "How can they have so many blades?"

Well, now I have dozens of HI blades.

Ahhh....thanks for that Steely Gunz. That was a bit obscure to a raw beginner like me. I figured that the prices were good, and thought that maybe the knives were being sold without sheaths...thus UBB meant "unsheathed bare blade". But of course the sheaths were shown in the top pictures, so that seemed like it was probably the incorrect interpretation.

Much appreciated thanks.

I've waited as long as I can stand to on the 18-inch 33-ounce WWII by Bura with Chiruwa handles. Since nobody has saved me from myself, I'm sending an email on it.

People don't pick their khuks. Khuks pick their people;)

Good for you, it is an excellent choice. I was contemplating sending an email on it myself.

Hello All,
Sorry this is a little late. New job keeps me real busy.

I didn't know Uncle Bill for long and I didn't know him very well. But I always enjoyed talking with him. I really liked his way of making people feel that they were his friend. He always told it like it was and didn't suger-coat stuff. He trusted you until you proved untrustworthy and even then might give you a second chance. He did business as it should be done, two people treating each other with respect. (It's all Karma.)
Everytime I pop open a Heinie I think of Uncle Bill. He was a truly one of Good Ones. I miss him.

Mike

This post of Yangdu’s has prompted me to trawl back through all my old HI email, and this has bought back some wonderful memories of Bill.
I first contacted him back in (pre Paypal) March 2001 to arrange payment for a JKM-1 that I had bought on UBBB.
Unsure how to pay for international shipping I had emailed him to ask him what I needed to do.
He replied simply “I'll get the knife sent tomorrow and we'll get the shipping charge worked out okay.”
The knife was sent immediately, and we settled up a few days later. I could not believe it; I had never come across such an honest dealer on the internet before. But, this set the tone for all our future dealings, and here are a few bits and pieces from later emails that epitomises Bill for me. I’m sure that all of you guys that ever dealt with Bill will have similar memories, but here are some of mine …..

If you have any problems with it email me and many thanks for interest.

Your knife flies today

Right. No boat for this knife

I have a couple of big blades in stock. Anything in particular you are looking for?

Many thanks for kind words and offer. I hope we won't have to use it but it is nice to know that it is there just in case.

We will get you something when you are ready

I'll check in the AM -- getting dark and I can't see in the shed where I keep the khukuris

Keep bugging me or I'll forget.

We can always order you one or whatever you want.

tried to email you yesterday but the mail got bumped back as undeliverable. Maybe it will work today.

OK. Take your time.

I don't mind the special requests. They are standard here.

just leaving to go do today's shipping.

Let me know.

Am I missing something? The last 8 or 10 emails I received from you contained only this message : ÿþ<

I've got everything you want and I'll pick out the best Kumar Karda in stock for the wife!

I'll try to hang onto the blem for you but the Nepali shipping staff sometimes recycles things.

I put your name on it.

Why don't you buy the AK Bowie off the shopping site (link below) for $175 and we'll call it even.

Stay well over there and have a good camping trip. Give me a buzz when you get back.

I could go on, but I’ll leave my final words to Bill himself. After I received the JKM-1 from him, I asked Bill about the origin of the knife’s name. He informed me that it was named for James Mattis of Chai Cutlery, and that …

“He was one of the world's good guys.”

Hey Bill. You too mate.
Thanks, and Happy Birthday.

And Yangdu, thank you for prompting us to remember.

Richard :)

P.S."More later and thanks again. "

I'm a little late to the party, but happy birthday, Bill. I hope you make it back to spread some more good in the world, and we get a chance to meet again in the next life.

I had a nearly identical Uncle Bill experience, emailed him on a one of a kind khuk, but I was begging him to hold it for a few days until I got paid. His response was to ship the knife and send me an email saying "You boys from Texas are usually OK, send me the money when you get it". A fine gentleman, too few of his kind left in this world. In addition to his other outstanding traits, I guess we were both born on Sept 23rd!

Mine go under the bed, too, cared for by the infamous dust bunnies.

Hell, you're just a kid.

Advice from dust bunnies -- leave everything alone. Nice pix.

The dust bunnies said they'd take it when you got tired of it.

Good for a hundred years.

Thirty cents a day and all the rice you can eat.

No thanks to the Nepali shipping staff

The dust bunnies are experts.

Just pass the Camels, Heineken and the morphine and I'll be fine.

Never knew Bill, but he started a great company and sounds like one helluva guy. Glad to find out we share the same birthday. Wish I could have met him. Yangdu, you do a wonderful job at keeping this splendid company running. Thanks be to you and all the folks in Nepal that make this company what it is.
