Check out this video - this was shown in another thread and I want to find one.

YouTube - Fishing Kit-Improvments Testing

I want to build a fishing kit like this dudes and I need your help. Do any of you have a bit tube as seen in the video (fast forward to about 1:20)? I check Home Depot today and no go.

If so - can you send me one if I pay you? The tougher the better. Best is if you can find me a place where I can procure one. I have looked.

Thanks,

TF

talfuchre,
sorry i can't help you with the bit tube. i'm the one that posted the link in the previous link, and i agree it's a fantastic idea, which is used with great results in the video. i haven't stumbled across one similar yet, but my eyes are always looking.

I have never seen them for sale without a bit in them and that's a lot of expense for what you want. Plumbers and electricians often have those bits and may have an old tube laying around somewhere.

Interesting, I can't remember where i read it, Ranger Rick maybe, but as a young boy i built a similar casting rig with a soda can.

It didn't have internal storage, but it used the same principle of the line sliding off a cylinder.

If you can't find a case like that...maybe you can build an equivilent one with plumbing supplies.

As far as the Tube's many can fill this need but look at the Contents of your Gear not just for Fresh water. I f you can get your Hooks rated for salt water and circle hooks with a few Jigs and other Lure's

I don't have one like that or I'd send it to you. All of the 20.00 to 25.00 bits I buy for drilling in steel come in heavy duty tubes but they are square tubes. If you know any Iron Workers on a construction site they tend to go through the most bits. It's only the high dollar bits that come in the good tubes but check your local "Bolt" supply house where the contractors go...they may have some empties on hand.

Sorry I can't help, but I've been looking for a tube myself for exactly the same idea! So far I'm thinking of a 2" PVC plumping pipe with end caps, but I'm keeping my eyes open for anything better.

Thinner tubes like the Tube Vault aren't as good because they don't allow as much line wrapped around, cause more 'line memory' if you use monofilament, and don't wind in as easily when you catch a fish, or weeds.

Now there's a niche in the survival kit market...

P.s. Does anyone know where I can Gamakatsu Octopus and Nautilus circle hooks in the UK, in their full range of sizes? I can only find the largest sizes here (at 3x the US price and useless for inland fishing in the UK anyway) and the US sellers all want a stupid amount of money for shipping $20 worth of hooks here.

I am headed to the new local Lowe's store this afternoon. They mailed out a 10% off coupon. I'll see what they have.

Thanks Texas and Katdaddy for the work.

I am ordering some of those tube vaults (which are 2 liter bottles not expanded) and seeing how those go!

EDIT:

Ordered - Whew - 8 dollars shipping is a bit much - but - I wanted them so I ordered six. If they are good to go - I will review them here.

Why not 1" or 1.5" PVC tube? Cheap and strong. I don't know how much a die to thread it would cost; a good plumbing supply place might cut to length and thread it for you.

TF,

I will take a look, I ordered some larger drill bits a while back from McMaster-Carr, and they came in those type of tubes, not sure if they are still in the tube or in a drill index, but I will give it a look.

How about using just 3/4" pvc or plumbing pex with a fixed end cap on one end and a removable one on the other?

The problem with those drill bit tubes is that they normally aren't very heavy duty. If you accidentally stretch the plastic on one end, the cap wont fit on well anymore. PVC or pex will hold up for much longer under use.

Hey TF...I made one with a Tube Vault. It works pretty good and I have extra line wrapped just below the cap and cast using the bottom of the tube. I did use some o-rings (rubber band will work) to retain the loose end when completed. I'm thinking using a swivel clip with leader so you can detach and drop in the tube without pinching the line when put it in the vault and seal the top...a cork may be another option for a cap/lid. The more I think about it, I think I'll tie on a swivel clip and make a half-dozen leaders with dry flies, hooks or spinnner and store them in the tube with some other stuff. Just pull out the leader with hook, fly or spinner add a weight or bobber and let'r rip...?

I was thinking of rolling a section of inner tube entirely over the line, if I could find a suitable size. It would protect the line and you could unroll just the amount that you want to cast, then grip the rolled up bit to stop more slipping out on casting. saves the whole lot flying off and tangling up, especially if using mono line.

Plus it's extra firelighting stuff.

M&M' (the candy) minis tube. Stopper is attatched, and it comes in Orange!. Holds plenty of fishing kit. Thats what i use. i wrap the line around the tube pop can style for casting/reeling.

I have something just like that and I used the unblown 2 liter bottle tubes/plastic test tube. They are tough as nails and get for kits. I have ordered some, but also have found some at the candy store filled with goop.
