Bit tube for survival fishing kit?

If you know someone in a tool and die shop they can get you one. Most vertical mill cutters come in those tubes.

Those beach tubes look pretty decent as well.

Well, I just tied a few leaders with some artificial baits and a spinner:

First, I forgot how hard it is to cut that dang Sypderwire fishing line:eek: Those mini-fishing bobbers will fit in the tube vault.

I haven't figured out the best way to package the Tube Vault, but it will hold a couple of bobbers, several split shot/weights, sewing bobbins (use the plastic ones) and assorted hooks and a couple of the pre-tied leaders.

So far so good; I haven't fished with it, but did some casting in the back yard...it's good for 10-15 yards and a little practice, accuracy isn't that bad.

ROCK6, I completely take back what I said about those being too small!

That kit absolutely rocks! :D

Meanwhile, here's what I've been playing with. I found a tube...

It's a Colgate toothpaste pump tube. The top bit with the pump pulls off, with a bit of persuasion. The innards can then be poked back out of the bottom with a screwdriver, assisted with a pair of pliers. That leaves you with a hollow tube. They are quite stiff; certainly good enough for this use.

I've managed to push-fit a top onto the bottom, but that's a bit tricky. It will need gluing as well and I'm not so sure about getting these plastics to weld together well. We'll see about that.

Otherwise, I could just cut the flared bottom off the tube and shorten it, then use two a cap on either end. The transparent caps push-fit quite tightly onto the tube, so no glue needed there. It's probably water tight like that.

The tube end that's going to be cast from probably could do with a gentle rounding and smoothing, to prevent the line snagging on it.

As a bonus, the foil with the writing on, which I peeled off, is holographic underneath. Could be used for a lure??? (Should have put this in the McGuyver thread)

Anyway, here's some pic's:

Looks like mine, those tube work pretty good. I got a real small balsa wood bobber that fits in there no problem.

I went by the Lowes this afternoon. I found some drill bit tubes but they were nothing like what I see in the video. Some were about 6 to 8 inches long and others were around 24 inches long. They did not look as sturdy as what he has. Sorry!

The more I think about it, I think I'll tie on a swivel clip and make a half-dozen leaders with dry flies, hooks or spinnner and store them in the tube with some other stuff. Just pull out the leader with hook, fly or spinner add a weight or bobber and let'r rip...?

This is EXACTLY what I am doing right now! Awesome minds think alike.

Or is it the brain damage?

Quill,

I have a tool and die shop on campus - I will score a few when I get home.

Katdaddy,

Thanks so much man - it really does mean a lot!

Foxyrick and others,

I will have enough material left over from my order and making my kit that I will put two up for sale when I get them done! Just what it cost me plus shipping.

I found one of these at Walmart this evenng. Very nice container!

That's it guys.......
Found in the vitamin / supplement section of Wally World.

They seem to be somewhat larger also than the tube vaults [unexpanded 2 liter bottles] I got a while back. Plus, you get 26 grams of quality protein that actually tastes pretty good. ;)

If you want a name brand to look for, look for Milwakee brand bits.. ..their mason bits come in tubes like that, but the last core bit I bought the tube wasn't really that strong.. they used to be. I'd think you'd be better off doing what others have suggested and look into the PVC.

I made one from a county comm tube vault. Immediately below the screw-on cap is a small (1/4"?) flange around the entire tube. I drilled 4 holes on each side of the tube through the flange. This way, I can just unhook my snap swivel and hook it through whichever hole it happens to line up with. The inside of the tube is still waterproof as the flange is solid. Anyway, just another idea.

Something I would consider is the tubes that welding rods/solder rods sometimes come in. Cut one down, cap the free ends and you are good to go...Just a thought...

What do you guys think about going to the pharmacy and getting larger pill bottles? The come in all different sizes and shapes for storage of pills. They can be water tight.

made mine out of a 1 7/8 x 5 pill bottle... when you are an old fart like me, your meds come in the 90 day amounts
