My first PC was an IBM 8088 in 1990. I upgraded the motherboard to an 8086 (286)Whooo----boy! I've owned every iteration in-between. THAT'S how far back I go with the PC and computer. I even knew DOS quite well.

Alas, this week I am throwing in the hat. I just ordered a dual core 2.66ghz Mac Tower Pro with 4gigs of ram and a 250gb H/D. Wireless capability as well for a pending wireless network. I will put my 'trusty' new PC downstairs in the family room. Relegated to other tasks.

I am tired of the BS I have gone through for years in configuring them--especially at the most inconvenient times. I finally figured out that my productivity was taking a toll, and that I was not saving money with a lower-cost PC--it was costing me money. I won't go into the hows and what's, but everything from losing the boot sector on a H/D, viruses, crashes to reboot EVERY day, and consistent program lockups have pushed me over the edge.

In the graphic arts industry a Mac is the standard, and, let's face it, I am IN the graphic arts field. I expect a learning curve and with the cost of new programs and the hardware itself, I am out about $4000. That's what I said. And, I already have a 22" monitor.

In a month or so I will be regaling the Mac world with my NEW snobbery, or I will be fighting mad. :grumpy:

Well, with any luck, I'll just be smug, instead.... ;) :D

Wish me well. I'll report back.

Good Luck on the upcoming smugness. :)

If I could have two kick-butt monster computers, I'd want one of them to be just like your new Mac and one to be just like my new home-built PC. But since I can only have one, it's got to be a PC.

Let us know how it works out!

My first PC was an IBM 8088 in 1990. I upgraded the motherboard to an 8086 (286)Whooo----boy! I've owned every iteration in-between. THAT'S how far back I go with the PC and computer. I even knew DOS quite well.
My first computer use was at a terminal to the University of Illinois PLATO system in about 1978. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLATO ) That was the real predecessor to the Internet, and Al Gore was nowhere to be seen.
Computer Programming class in high school was on a Commodore 64.
The first computer I owned was an 800mhz Pentium III Dell.
I do have some IBM 5150 machines upstairs...
but whenever I have to do anything in DOS, I have to consult the DOS for Dummies books. :D

I do have a bunch of older Macs, including an unusual Power Computing PPC clone, a pile of LC and LCii, a couple of early laptops, and a few others.

Although I've worked with a PC, the only computer I've ever owned has been a Mac. I think you're going to be very happy with your decision.

JFC, since I wrote this post 90 mins ago, I have had a problem in Photoshop with my mouse doubleclick speed, causing me to spend an extra 15mins repairing a selected file, a complete lockup of ACDSee as it was supposed to be burning a CD, and a subsequent reboot crash when I went to Task Manager to shut down the frozen ACDSee program. I am feeling NO remorse over this decision. :barf:

It's like a Chevy car that has given me a quarter of a million miles of service, but now the time comes to buy a Lexus as it is stalling and ditching me.... ;)

Mac is the only computer I would ever own. I have had 2 now, one I got 2 years ago (great!!!!) and one that was top of the line back in 1992, with a 22" black and white monitor, that thing worked everytime, never crashed, never glitched, never did anything but work. I like the macs, good choice! Make microsoft start earning their money!

CONGRATS on getting a Mac!! Macs are the only computers I have ever owned or ever WILL own.

windoz blowz!!! i havnt used it about two years. there will be far less crashes with your mac. Good choice.

if u feel really frisky try a dual-boot w/ ur fav linux distro.

Treated myself to an iMac a couple of months ago- simple, no frills 17" monitor, 2gb RAM, 250gb HD, upped the processor. Right now, I stop and think about why did I let myself suffer so long with using Windows.

Thank goodness for Apple.

If I had a bunch of money, I would get an apple for doing graphic work, but I have very little trouble with my crusty old PC now going on 7 years old. I also like to play PC games. Unless something has changed, Macs suck for gaming.

Overpriced yuppie cult hardware vs Evil Megacorp winblows? how do you vote for the lesser of these evils? Being poor, I will have to vote with my wallet.

Still will have to go with the PC next time around. I know some more computer savvy folks who use Linux or whatever, but I am not that advanced.

Oh yeah, congrats on your new system

Woo Hoo! Another convert to the Light Side! Let me know if you need any advice! I do use PC's for certain apps that have only just started to appear on the Mac ( Project, Visio etc) otherwise, I've never regreted the extra cost of Apple- ever! My first was the 128K. I've spent close to $15 on them since and made many times that in SAVED time and profit!:D

When I was pricing out laptops this spring, the MacBook Pro (Biggie) was actually cheaper feature for feature than a Dell! I wanted the Mac anyways to do more video and graphics stuff as well as to play with Garage Band!

FYI, you can dual-boot your Mac if there are any programs/games you want to keep using from Windoze. Or, I bought Parallels, an emulation software that lets me run Windoze and Linux (and any other OSs) within Mac OSX! I loved blowing my IT guys away by having all three up and running at once...

Hope you're happy with a mac. All the macs I've used have been worse than Wuindows boxes. Mac people were amazed how often I crashed macs.

Have you tried anything made in the last year and a half?

I wrote my first simple programs when I was 13 or 14 in the late 1960's. I wrote in binary using machine language templates. I actually had an opportunity to work on the Arpanet in 1973 while working with a professor who was doing post-doctoral research on the effects of truncation errors in estimating volumes described by complex surfaces - kind of using computers to point out the weaknesses and limitations of computers.

My first personal computers were two VIC-20's I had in the early 1980's - they had 5K of RAM (compare that to my current 4G!). Then I had a Commodore 64 and a couple of Amigas that were based on the Motorola 68000 series of chips and which came equipped with various co-processors. They blew the PCs away in every way, including real multi-tasking in the early '90's, but were not commercially successful, although the later Amigas running software like the Video Toaster were the choice of graphic artists in the '90's.

Things sure have changed. I would like to see one of today's coders try to get anything at all to run on 5K RAM! :D

Tracking says it's on the truck for delivery today. It will be a short while before I replace my PC. I need to know that all my working programs, internet, printers, etc are ready.

Still, I am looking forward to it. :)

PS, I did order it with the 'Parallel's' software to be able to run previous Windows programs as needed.

Sure, Coop - join the fanatics! ;)

What has actually turned me off Apple computers (although I own an iPod and have an iPhone on order for "testing") are...the people who use them. (Sorry :o ) My son, my art directors, most of our music producers - all use Apples. I can't remember how many heated "discussions" I have had with my art directors about switching to an Apple, including all the arguments about Apples now being able to run all (most?) Windows programs. My answer is always the same: "Why don't I use an Apple? Because the first computer I was given/bought and "got into computers" with was a PC. It's just that simple."

I don't play games, but I now have thousands of dollars worth of PC peripherals and thousands of dollars of PC software - I'm supposed to give all that up? :grumpy:

I've always had PC's----my mom insists on Mac's---every time I go over there and try to do something on it---its just a lesson in frustration.

All I can say is I'll never own a Mac or anything that looks like a Mac---or a Mac's brother---or a Mac's red headed stepchild.

Ya---they're that bad.

My condolences.

I converted 3 years ago to mac at home and I have not been able to crash it yet MAC's Rule
