I found a Becker Brute NIB in a cabinet at my FFL guys shop and got it because Ive heard quite a bit of praise for them on this forum. I chopped with it a little bit yesterday and was not greatly impressed. My 12 inch Ontario machete does just as well. The edge was OK sharp out of the box and I havent done anything with it. Looking at the edge it appears too acute. Not sure if acute is the right word. The edge angle needs to be laid back more? Do any of you guys have these and what, if anything did you to make them cut better? Its an impressive piece of steel for chopping but I dont think I'll give up my C.S. Carbon V Trailmaster yet.--Thanx--KV

Most production knives really need work done on the edge. This is just a fact of life. Even Busse's really need attention at the edge.

Not only was my BK1 edge acute upon arrival, but it was ground unevenly (more on one side than the other). Reprofiling the edge evened it out and improved performance quite a bit.

The BK1 is a horrible knife.....you better send it to me for proper disposal. :D

You guys generosity in willing to take this terrible thing off my hands is overwhelming. My confidence in humanity is restored. I knew I could count on y'all to help me out of this thorny problem ;):D--I think I'll play with it a while first though--Thanx--KV

Just some geometry here, move along, move along.

Acute- ending in a sharp point: as a: being or forming an angle measuring less than 90 degrees <an acute angle>

Obtuse- not pointed or acute : blunt b (1)of an angle : exceeding 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees

So, generally speaking, all knife edges are acute (less than 90 degrees inclusive). Some are more acute than others. A knife that does not cut well due to edge bevel geometry is not acute enough. I would call it "too obtuse" even though it is most likely less than 90 deg inclusive (acute by definition). As has been said above, most knives need attention at the edge, "out of the box." For me, only spyderco and benchmade have been exceptions.

Same issue with mine...now that it's reprofiled with a less acute angle, it bites much better but still has the beefy blade to spit. No issues with the edge with it done much thinner.

Exact same experience here.

That I am,spooky is getting married,he will not be able to handle the addictive nature of the BK1.....LOL....

Any tips on re-profiling this re-curve type blade? I havent dealt with one before. I'm planning on starting with a small file I use to sharpen my machetes and working down to progressively finer stones.--Thanx--KV
