Hey guys, I want to get a high quality, inexpensive first fixed blade knife soon, and I'm not sure which to get a;

BK-11

OR

A Mora Companion Clipper

The mora is less expensive to begin with, but when I get all the extras I want (Kydex sheath and a Tek-Lok mainly), its about the same price as a Bk-11 with a Tek-Lok.

So I leave my fate in your hands,

My honest opinion is the 11. The mora is a great blade, but the 11 is honestly tougher. I wouldn't feel under prepared with either, but the 11 is just more of a robust knife. Now if your not looking for that in a blade, the mora might be your best option, but for me, the 11 wins every time.

Thanks. What I'm looking for is a knife to take camping with me, and on the AT this summer. Thanks again for your recommendation.

My brother likes both, but recommends the 11.

I have a 14 and the Mora, and they are both must haves as far as I'm concerned. Great blades, and you can always have another good little blade in your bag, car, tool box, etc....

I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I bought a Mora to test and while it will do things to wood I've never seen another knife do, I simply don't trust it. I too would pick the BK11.

Thanks, I'm looking for something to take on weekend campouts and on the AT this summer. So I want light weight.

Personally, I think I would go for a Mora. I know I might get blasted for that, but for your use, I would go with the Mora.

The BK11 for sure is tougher, but I find that it hurts my hand to use for any length of time, and I would rather take a Mora backpacking than the BK11 stock. If you get the scales for it then I hear it is much more comfortable, so that is something I would consider.

If I was going to take one knife on the AT, I'd likely take the BK16, as it splits the difference between the two. It has the extra blade length that I personally like, and it has the toughness that beckers are known for.

Good luck man :).

Thanks. What kind of things are we talking about, anyhow?

Welcome to the BKT forum, brother.

What he's talking about is the way a Mora just slides through wood like its not even there. I have several Moras and highly recommend them.

I think if you went with something like the Mora Black, Robust or Survival, you will find it more than adequate for your AT tasks. That said, the BK 11 is a stout neck knife. My only complaint is the handles don't fit my hand and during prolonged tasks, fatigues my hand.

If you are looking for something in that size, I recommend the BK14.

Either one you go with, will suit you just fine.

Since this is the BKT forum, get the BK14.

I would say unless you open a lot of bottles get a bk-14 over the 11 but if it was just the mora or the 11, I would take the 11

Thanks guys for all the reviews. So far its the 11 or the 14. If I get the 11 theres a chance I may get a spare set of scales from my big bro.
14's not that much more money, but no chance of free scales on that one.
The Mora, I assume I Could not baton with, right?

BK-14 w/ Ka-Bar Zytel Scales (around $12-$14). Every time.

And no I wouldn't recommend batonning w/ a Mora.

Okay, so when I get some money, its between the 14 and the 11, either way I also need to get a Tek-Lok. So thanks for all the recommendation.

I have a BK-11 (San Mai). I added the metal clip from the KA-BAR TDI series and micarta scales. Never felt like a neck knife to me. Makes a great belt knife. That being said I have a Mora Clipper and 4 other Moras. I find I use and carry my Mora's more than any other of my fixed blades. Nice thing is you can buy multiples and stash them. I have one in my truck box. One in my CERT bag. A couple hanging with my garden tools. I think the BK11's blade design makes it a great skinning knife - I hope to try out next week. Whereas as Mora's are a little pointy and I think better at bushcraft.

I am not a knife snob and while I have 3 fixed blades that ran at or over $100, I find I get along just fine with less expensive knives. I have an appreciation for Mora's, Cold Steel Bushman and Trailhawks, Opinels and of course mod'd Old Hickory knives. For the price of a BK-11 you could probably get a CS Bushman and the Clipper.

I have a cold steel bushman Bowie and its a great beater but my vote would be with a 11/14 I have a 11 with a trial belt clip and micarta scales on there way. For my day to day tasks its a pretty amazing knife. For AT I would say the 14 just for the larger handle

Well, my hands are not the largest, but if I get the BK 14 and the scales it will be around $50 and then I still need the Tek-Lok.
