BK-11 or a Mora

I can only say I really like my 14 with zytel scales, does a great job.

You'll probably end up getting both the Becker and the Mora, though. I know probably I will:o

Ya, when I get more money, I probably will get both, but until then, I must leave it up to complete strangers to pick my knife for me.:)

You'll get both eventually. I have two 14's and a companion and they're great. Batoning is over-rated and even less useful with a knife that small. I have seen moras batoned across the grain to chop smaller trees. The moras are sturdier than they look, though not as tough as a bk11/14.

The BK11/14 you can really abuse, the mora is cheaper and has a comfortable handle as-is. Both pretty much need a new sheath out of the box as far as I'm concerned.

Moose said everything I would - except to add that the Kabar scales for the 14 are only $15 for 2 sets (orange and black), not $50 per set.

I love my 14 but I like it as a backup/secondary to my BK2. Personally, if I was on the trail with just one knife I would want something bigger than the 11/14/mora. I am not sure why you are so set on a tek-lok when price is a factor. I wont spend that much on a belt clip when I could DIY something for a fraction of the cost and use the money I saved towards a better knife. The cost of a 14/scales/teklok would cost you roughly around 65. I would pickup a BK16 and try to DIY some sort of scout/rangerr setup

The Mora is a wood carving fool of a blade and slides thru wood like butter. The blade on mine was razor sharp and unlike some people I really like the plastic sheath. Maybe because I've spent too much time hunting and fishing in the rain and had leather ruined.

I guess I'm thinking about this as a survival blade and I just wouldn't want to get caught with only having a Mora. Moose is correct in that the Mora Companion is going to be a better knife to use for long periods of time. I guess you could just order two Moras and if you break the first be more careful with the next. My thoughts on the mora breaking would be if you needed to process or baton wood. I've done it with mine in the back yard just to see what I could get by with, after all if only cost $15. It made it through 3" green downed limbs from a storm without issue.

So I as long as you don't beat on it, the Mora will do what is needed on a camping trip. Spend the $15 on the Mora and then save up and get you BK15, 16, or 17.

It depends on what you are using it for. If you are doing Bushcraft or carving, I would get the Mora Clipper. If I needed a short bladed knife that I needed to minor chopping or batoning, I would choose the BK-11. The decision is really up to you, and what you are needing. My knife of choice would be the Mora.

I like the 11 , more so now that I have custom wood scales. I think out of the box it will not be as ready as the mora to do woodwork and the edge may need some touching up. But once you get it set up properly, despite its size it will handle most tasks easily.

It does depend on your budget as well , perhaps the bk 16 or 17 might be better if you want the whole handles and teklok options. I think you'll find that if you get the mora you'll find it will be adequate for most tasks. Most of us will acknowledge that but are just too addicted to our collection ;p

If you like the Mora you can probably go to your local SalvationArmy store and buy a box full of them for a quarter apiece- they're called old steak knives and kitchen knives. Sharpen them on a bench grinder and you're ready to go.

A Tek-Lok is an extra $8, not that much, and allows easier transition from ranger to scout.

I recommend the 14 a little more handle to work with. Drop the tek lok option and tie the 14 sheath ranger/scout style with paracord, and you only need $5 more to get a mora clipper. I would bring two knives min.

I'd go Mora...The 11 is nice and the 14 is another great way to go but I still prefer the Mora for any light tasks.

I have both and to be honest...bk11 all the way, just put some handles and you have a tough knife. Convexed the edge and it is a very tough blade
