I used some money from my wife's parents to buy a BK-16. I had been wanting one of these for several years now but never pulled the trigger on one. I then debated between the 16 and 17 going back and forth for at least a year.

Finally I said the heck with it and got the 16. I like the looks of the 17 better, but for general farm use, camp food prep, and bushcraft stuff, I think the 16 will be better and am glad that I got it. One day maybe I will get the 17 to satisfy my attraction to it looks.

Anyways enough talk, here are some photos. The past few days have been warmer and the snow is melting off. This seemed like a good break from all the sub-zero temps to head out back of the house and collect some more Red Osier for primitive arrow shafts that I make. Overall I am very happy with it minus the truck bed liner, but I will strip it like I did my 7 and then it will have much less drag when cutting.

In the next week I will electro etch the blade info deeper, strip the paint, and force a patina. I am not sure about the sheath. It is a little on the large side for a knife this size. Plus I am not a big fan of the double loop snaps. Just one at the bottom would be fine. I might remove the top loop and add a small bungee as I have seen others do.

In the next month or so I will make a leather deep pouch style sheath. I prefer a leather sheath and enjoy leather work. I will probably keep the factory sheath on my pack and use the leather sheath for daily carry around my farm.

Part of the fun of these knives, is getting to make them your own. Modifications will commence soon!!!:D

Congrats on the purchase. Nice set of kick off pics. Looking forward to more as the mods happen.

Thanks. I am looking forward to putting this knife to use. Seems like it will be what I have been looking for in a medium sized knife.

Nice man! I received mine the 24th--the blade is already stripped!

Great knife. Will be a classic for many years. You really should get the 17 as well, it has a much different character.

Excellent pics, thanks.

LOVE my 16! 17 not as much but still a good knife. I hope you get to use that 16 daily and if you don't mind can you post up some picks of the arrows you make.

Thank you, Greebe for your kind words and really fine pics....... I was not familiar with red osier dogwood before and I must thank you for increasing my knowledge ...... Hope you had a great Christmas.......

Ethan

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think this is going to be a good user knife. Only thing I notice right now is that the index finger notch seems too small for me. I wish there was a little more meat left at that point.

I am going to add some liners and see if that helps. Any recommendations of materials to use for this? I have been looking around the house and haven't found many plastic items thick enough. I was thinking something around .050-.060", what do you guys typically use?

Ethan- Most people have seen the Red Osier, but do not know that it makes a great arrow shaft. I probably have 50-60 that I am seasoning right now. Cull a quarter of those and I will end up with 3-4 dozen good shafts.

Keep enjoying your 16, I love mine!

I have not had a need for liners, but I've heard of people cutting up DVD cases and even car floor mat material.

Like others said, please include some pics of your arrows when you post pics of your mods. What type of bow do you use?

For liners that have a little shock dampening to them you could use shower pan liner or plumbing gasket (6"x6" sheet) both available at the Gnome Despot. I used the shower pan liner for my 15. Just right for my medium sized hands.

Dollar stores have flexible cutting mats that are about .040". WalMart has them too, in colors, and seem thicker.

There are also cheapo plastic file folders and DVD cases.

Even thicker are small cutting boards about .1"~.125".

I have a takedown recurve and a pyramid bow I am making that is almost have finished. I have made a few other longbows, but no longer have them. I got out of archery for the past decade, but have been getting back into it as it is getting so expensive to shoot my firearms.

I made my first bow back when I was in high school. I always liked making primitive, American Indian style bows and arrows with materials I collect. I need to go out and find some goose or turkey feathers for doing an eastern two feather fletch like this. I have always done the typical three feather fletch so I would like to give this a try. Apparently the two feather fletch works as well if not better then three feather type.
