BK-16 First Outing and Mods!!

It's always nice to get a new knife. I like the looks of the 16 but the handle is just a bit small for my hands.

Are those 2 arrows you made or an example of that fletching?

I'm sure you know this but if not, Red Osier works well for basket making as well..

Sorry Greebe, I stole your carabiner idea for my BK17. But I'm not sure if I prefer that for latching it onto a belt loop, or just wearing the sheath on my belt. It's kind of hard to tell since I had it replaced with the BK10.

NO worries that is why I like posting things. I am going to sew up a leather loop for my belt so I do not have to clip it onto my belt loop and risk yanking it off. I like the carabiner for winter carry as it drops it down far enough to be below my jacket.

No the arrows were just examples of the two feather fletch. I have always done a three feather fletch.

I had not seen baskets made with R.O. That is cool. Did you make those? I bet I could make a nice arrow quiver with some of the smaller ones around here.

Looking better and better...... I have one of Dex's shorties and it is sweet...... I am always torn between it and a simple leather pouch style....... Your mods are well thought out.... I am gonna have to give them go...

Thanks. This is a pretty sweet little knife, you did a nice job designing it.

I also like the look of Dex's short sheath. I am going to give that a shot I think.

Yes, I made the baskets and I also made a quiver using the Dogwood. I thought I had some pictures on Photobucket, but not, so I took a couple of quickees - could have turned out better, but you get the idea. The flash really drained the colour from the fletching (Wild Turkey wings and tails).

A better shot of the fletching (previous picture). The shafts were dyed with black, juicy hulls of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra).

I found the quiver to be fairly heavy.

Making baskets with Red Osier is quite easy. You use the Dogwood when it is green (state, not colour) and gather it in the spring, before it starts to leaf out. When you first make the basket, it will be nice and tight. As it dries, it will loosen up. This can be corrected by adding more rows of waling.

Doc -- Those look nice. I can see how they would be heavy though. What do you suppose the weight of one of the quivers is?

Also nice arrows. I always liked the wrapped fletching. Are the shafts POC or foundwood?

Thanks Greebe. I checked the weight on the quiver (no straps, etc.) - just about a pound.

I have to ask you what POC stands for because I found a gazillion definitions here. Those particular shafts, I believe, were Home Depot Ramin. They stopped carrying Ramin, now, however. My favourite shafts are Viburnum lantana, the same wood Otzi used for his arrows. It's not native to here, but some have escaped cultivation, much to my joy. :)
