Let me begin this by saying I had a shit ton of fun today using these two blades. However, as you'll see and read, I am getting a little bit concerned about my BK-2! It is pretty rare that someone raises a quality control issue with a BK-2. It is known by nearly all knife enthusiasts as an excellent hard use knife, a "sharpened pry bar." I have always really liked the design of the BK2. With that being said, it's never been much more than a "fun addition" to what I might be carrying. I love using it, but I don't find it to be the most comfortable or efficient for most camping/bushcraft/survival tasks. So of course it's fun to beat the living crap out of this knife because it really does come back for more every time, but I just don't pack it on my long camping/hiking trips due to its weight and "eh" function for what I need on those trips. What has made this worse is that ever since I received my BK-2, I've had HUGE problems with the edge chipping and rolling. I don't understand why because I do NOT abuse the knife or do anything it can't handle. I only cut wood with it and I've actually beat on my ESEE 5 way worse without any chips or rolls at all (and I've used it a great deal). So, after every use I've been sharpening those chips and rolls out of the edge and putting a shaving sharp edge back on the blade. Sure enough, the edge is chipped up when I come back from a trip. I am beginning to wonder if I just received a lemon or what, because this shouldn't be happening to my BK2 if it doesn't happen to my ESEE 5. I have begun babying the BK2 to see if it stops chipping, but it always does regardless. I don't really want to bother sending it back to Ka-Bar but it's just putting a bad taste in my mouth about Beckers (despite loving my BK7 and BK10 and having none of these issues) and I never want to bring it along. As the pictures below show, it still works, but the fragile cutting edge is really starting to bother me. Let me know what you guys think!

Started off by taking this tree down with the Kukri...I was REALLY impressed. It took very little effort and not very many whacks. It cut very deep into the wood. This is not the first time I've used this Kukri...more like the 10th...and I've only had to touch up the edge twice. It slices clean through paper and has not chipped or rolled...ever. I'm so unbelievably happy with it for the $30-40 it cost.

The BK-2 comes into play...

I love how the BK-2 batons, it's just so much fun.

Post-action photos of both. (I get so into what I'm doing that I forget to take more pictures, sorry). I managed to get a fire going even with how wet everything was. Note that the Kukri has absolutely no chips or rolls in the edge, and I beat on it MUCH harder than I did the BK-2.

Take a look at the edge and let me know what you think... I always repair the edge completely and put a shaving sharp edge on it after it does this. I don't sharpen it any different than my ESEE 5 or similar knives.

Thanks for looking! Don't flame me...I just want to appreciate my BK2 as much as my ESEE 5 and other BKTs!

Seems like maybe you got a lemon, heat treat wise, Ooor maybe the bevel your putting on it is too thin. If your sharpening it just the same as your other knives though, and they aren't doing the same, you probably got one that didnt get heat treated quite right, and Kabar is Fantastic about standing by their stuff, so you should be good to get it replaced. Email Tooj, or call Kabar customer support and let them know whats happening, bet you they square you away faster than you can say,
"Thanks Silverthorn, for that great advice"

I was thinking it could be a heat treatment issue. It really doesn't make sense that my BK-2 has this issue but my BK7 has never had it and (so far) my BK10 doesn't, either.

Wanted to acknowledge the customer service displayed here tonight...I don't know if there's any other companies where you'll get a personal call from the person who designed the knife offering to replace it and really giving some great conversation at the same time. Thanks Ethan, it's really nice to know that you can buy with confidence knowing that you go out of your way for your customers.

Sounds like you are about to get your problem solved. :)
Thanks for posting such great shots of these two in action.

That's awesome. But after being here for a bit, doesn't surprise me at all.

Impressive Mr. Becker. Good on you for running your business with real values and belief in your product. I buy with confidence and appreciation.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Another one of the many reasons I enjoy buying BK&T.
Impressive!

That's really impressive. Please let us know what the conclusion is. I know my BK2 has had some similar issues and I would love to figure that one out. Just sharpened her yesterday and could not get much to happen. Good 'ol BK&T.

Funny I had just posted on another forum about how you take a great deal of personal pride in providing a quality product, at an affordable price.

It's threads like this one that made me buy my first Becker. The BK2 is one of the only knives I own that people see it and say, "WOW! Look at that knife!"

Wow, what a class act Mr. Becker is! I can't say I'm surprised by this incredible act of customer service, and the fact that he cares so much about his customers, because I'm not surprised at all, I've heard many cool stories of situations like this. Still, it's really cool to see it happen (ok, read it happen, but you know what I mean!). I love my Beckers, I love Ka-bar, and Mr. Ethan Becker. Just amazing, this kind of thing just doesn't happen. Most companies would never even consider customer service like this, it would never even occur to them. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and I'm going to buy another Becker when I get my next paycheck!

Good on you Ethan. Gents that is how you take care of people. It does not get any better than that, guy has an issue, asks a few questions on our forum and the Big Guy sees it and responds straight away. Sir you made me a Becker man for life with that, Thank You for caring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that's why Beckers are the best production knives in the world, buy ten you won't regret it yada yada :D
Really, that's why Beckers are popular and gaining by people in the know. Excellent quality and customer service. You can't beat a personal call from the designer of the knives for issues with something that he can really distance himself from and never acknowledge.
For those reading, SEND IT BACK! If Ka-Bar doesn't know about it they can't fix it and prevent it from happening in the future.
This is the standard by which customer support should really be judged.
