BK-2 for a year.

Hey folks,

I was very impressed with the idea of using only a Ka-Bar Fighter/Utility for a year, which someone in the Ka-Bar area of this great forum brought up. I will be doing the same, just with my BK-2.

I will use only my BK-2 until 2013-4-1. I can't edc it legally, so it won't cover that base, and food prep in the kitchen isn't much fun either, but any outdoorsy stuff will be done with this one knife. Chopping, batonning, whittling, fire prep, outdoor food prep, skinning and cleaning game (I hope there will be something to skin and clean) and Ethan's Challenges. Whatever it is, the BK-2 will do it for me. I also want to complete the Bushclass USA Beginner's Certificate, using only my BK-2.

I will mod where I see fit, add gear I find myself using frequently to the sheath and otherwise just let the knife be. I hope that this will result in a no-nonsense woods multitool that I am comfortable with. I will, however, allow myself the use of a folding saw. There's just no point in chopping through 4" logs for firewood when you can tear through it in a few seconds with a saw.

I will post links, pictures, and videos of this evolution in this thread, and I hope we all can learn something from it.

Sit back and enjoy as my BK-2 and I travel through all four seasons in the outdoors, starting with spring. But please, feel very free to chime in with any ideas, requests and criticism you have to throw at me.

Here's 2 pics of the current setup. I made the sheath and kydex firesteel loop myself. The wear of the coating is due to prior use (mainly batonning through frozen 3" logs :D) and my attempts to fisk it without a belt sander. Worked out pretty nicely, needs sharpening at the moment though.

Thanks for reading!

Sounds like a great idea! I am looking forward to updates to this thread.

With all the new Beckers being resleased this year I doubt I could commit to just one but I like your choice.

Hmm. I would join ya and use only the bk5 but I juts got some new toys and not being able to use em for a year, well that would be just mean. Good luck. It won't let ya down

Well, if I do get new knives, I'll play with them for a bit too. I'm trying to save some money to go to the US in 2013, so not buying knives should help.

I might do this with the BK-16 when it comes out.

That's a good idea.

Good luck, I know the 2 will serve you well.

I'm doing the same myself for 6 months with a knife I designed. I'm in month 3 now and although there are zero problems with the knife the urge to use my others is killing me at times !!! I think it's going on these forums that makes you want to switch it up !!!!

That sounds like a good choice. Let us know how this year treats you. Pics and updates!

I say "good on you!", I won't be able to do it with the BK-teens coming out. Can't wait to see the well thought out mods to the BK2. I thought I remembered you moding the heck out of one already... ?

To the OP... who made that sheath, and are they making a BK7 version?

that's about what i'm looking for.Simple, utilitarian, and efficient

I made it. I'd love to tell you I'll make you one, but my BK-7 is heavily modded (so no use for making a sheath for a stock 7) and it'd take at least 2 months to get to you. Sorry. Feel free to link this to the Sheathmakers forum and ask those guys, they certainly know their stuff.

No way a "meat in America " tour? Awesome

Yeah I hope it all works out. I'm busy with a lot of other shit at the moment, but once I get that sorted out I'll start planning. The most important part is finding people I can stay with, since my main reason for taking this trip is to meet some of you guys in person. It'll be about 3 weeks in July.

I know I couldn't do that, and if you succeed I will tip my hat to you!

So not during one of the gatherings? That is a shame man, you would be able to meet many more that way.

Actually, I was hoping you would let me camp in your yard (or garage, on your couch, on the living room floor, or whatever) for a few days :D

I love this idea.
I think more of us, myself included should try this.
Pick a knife or other tool we think would be really good and use it for longer than a weekend, before moving on to more product testing.
Great thread.
