BK-2 or...?

For a different blade suggestion, this is interesting. I like the idea of a 5 for an outdoor kitchen setup...but would the 15 be enough? Does anybody offhand have a photo of the 5 in hand?
The BK Blade Database sticky at the top of this subforum has full specs and pics of all BK models, past and present.

The 15 would be an excellent choice as well. But, since you already have a 16 on order, I hesitated to recommend it cuz ... you'll like the 15 better. ;)

In case you guys aren't familiar with the axe that I carry with me camping, here it is:

The recommendations for the 5 really has me intrigued. Does anybody have a photo with the 5 in hand?

Ahh. Spoken like a true owner. :) I think I would certainly like the compactness of the 15, but the full size handle on the 5 certainly has value for me.

That is an interesting take on it for sure. I viewed my giving away the knife rather not as a failure, but instead as a success in both stopping redundancy for me and passing on a good knife to someone that needed it.

No modding of the 7 by myself or any other would have - in my mind - caused it to take the place of my H&B axe. The things that can be done and the ways in which it can be used are too numerous to list, but those with one know and understand why it is better than a large knife.
I certainly understand the merits of a good axe...and the BK7 certainly isn't enough of a chopper to take the place of your H&B. It's got its fans, for sure; but another member recently made the analogy of the 7 being the middle child (with all the love going to the 2 and/or the 9, and I rather agree with it.
And while I'm certainly NOT trying to debate the merits of the 7, to say that I failed my first "challenge" as a Beckerhead is indeed presumptuous at best
The biggest problem with online communication is the failure to perceive tone and humor. I'm sorry if you took offense to any portion of my post; but rest assured that none was intended. It was typed with a grin, and hopefully sparked the same in some readers (not at all "at your expense").

That thread has some great info in it. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I will be reading for a while...

I like this idea. You have both obviously, so what exactly is it that you do with the 2 that you cannot do with the 16 - besides trying to chop down some larger tree?

LOL :) Do you have both?
The question wasn't directed toward me; but I do have both. On paper they might look similar, but the difference is substantial. I think I've got comparison pics that I can access from here - if not, I can post them in the morning.

Compared to the 15, the 5 seems huge. I can post a size comparison of those in the a.m., as well. I just got the 5 (and a spare) a few weeks ago; so I haven't done something with it, yet...other than putting on a set of bocote scales that I already had sitting on my desk.

Oh, I agree. I wont spend money just to have something and take photos either (well... I'm also into photography, but that's another whole ball of wax).

For what its worth, I don't plan to own a bk7 either. And while the bk2 was my first Becker, now that I'm more of a two knife type of camper the bk2 stays home most of the time. I generally take a Mora, a folding saw, and my bk9.

I hear the bk5 goes great with hawks and axes, but I don't have any photos of a 5 in hand "handy". But they are out there.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

Okay. That makes sense. Let's say for a moment that I were to stop carrying the MCA (I've got a license to kill, I think you what time it is, it's time to get ill) and go with a 9. What can I use that blade for besides chopping down trees or batoning thick wood? Honest question...

That's my bad then. I read/took it wrong and I apologize for doing so. I should have figured as much. Any guy that's been a forum member for almost 9 years and has less than 100 posts probably has it coming anyway. :D

That axe sure is a beaut! I carry a sack full of knives so I likem all. The more the marrier.

The 5:

The 15:

Hope this helps!

Let me ask you guys about the 5...it is more than an "outdoors kitchen" knife, or is that really what it is relegated to because that is what it was intended for? I mean, I searched for info about the 5 and came across the thread where the guy literally bent the blade batoning what he called "green wood."

I like to keep things as condensed as possible and like for knives (especially) to be cross-usable. I don't want to have to carry a knife for chopping big wood, a knife for batoning said wood, a knife for carving, a knife for kitchen work, a knife for .... I think you get the point. I went with the 16 because of what I read about its ability to be useful with all sorts of tasks.

BTW, for you guys that have a 5, will it fit into the mouth of a wine bottle? I cannot even begin to count the number of times that I've had a bottle of wine for my wife while (car) camping and she's broken the cork in half.

I sincerely appreciate all the responses and help that you guys are offering to me...

Yes, yes, no...
Hah, Paul revere, I see what ya did there

Some old school BB :)

Can you see if the tip of the 5/15 will fit into the mouth of a wine bottle?

And you'd better get tickets...they are playing in Greensboro.

It won't baton like the 2, but it will out-slice the rest of the lineup. Hands down. The 5 is a laser beam. A lightsaber endorsed by Ethan Becker and Jerry Fisk!

They won't. My wife makes me open the wine, its worth the effort. Thanks for the heads up! I'm less than 45 min from Greensboro backroads willy to 40! I'd just get a stick and pop the cork into the bottle. If she won't drink cork then ya got more problems camping than just corky wine hehe. I'm not gonna try to convince ya either way and let ya figure it out. Gonna get me a hawk one day. Prob just a CS clunker and mod the shit out of it and add it to the blade sack

Thanks for the photos Jonny1280.

Trust me, we've had plenty of non-corked corked wine!

And as for that CS hawk...I'm not saying they're bad, because they're not. It's just the money thing; if you're going to mod it like you say, the H&B costs $70 - no modding needed and it's forged instead of cast! Well, I did add the paracord wrap, but I wanted a two handed firm/positive grip.

Seriously thinking about the 5 now...

IMO it's well worth checking out even if you find it's not exactly what your looking for, you won't be giving it away.
You'll find its a very useful tool and its great to keep it around in some fashion. Plus it's on sale. The only drawback, if you will, is you'll be ordering a 15 soon after :D

As for the hawk, you can tell I enjoy modding things so for half the price I'll take a chance. If I find a new addiction, the H&B will be on the Xmas list!

You sorta jest, but there is a loooooooong wait time from order placement to order delivery. One guy doing all the forging. Well worth it though.

Ugh, yeah, ya see I don't know my hawks. But I do know you could have a Becker as early as Tuesday!
