Bk 2 Vs bk 12

Having owned both now for quite some time, and having had chance to actually use them for awhile...I can honestly say I prefer the 12... but not by enough to make up the price difference between it and a 2 if I had to rebuy them and could only have 1....

It has more to do with blade thickness to me than anything else, and while I prefer the thinner knife for MOST stuff, I can't say the 10 is the perfect compromise either because I'm not a fan of the clip point...

I see the 12 as a full size handled version of a 16...fantastic knife IMHO.... but the 2 is only SLIGHTLY less nimble with its thicker blade and can hold its own for sure.

I've expressed my feelings about the 12 often enough that I didn't feel compelled to do it in this thread.

Thanks for digging up that comparison shot  - I wouldn't have thought to it with the scales removed.
In case anybody doesn't know, those 3 holes in the 12 (where the rear cutout is different from the others) are where the brass plugs go. I took mine out because I didn't feel like modifying my wood handles to accommodate them; but, otherwise, I probably would have left them there. (They're for adjusting the balance - making it blade heavy or more neutral. The difference isn't significant, but it is noticeable.)

There's a video with Ethan and Doug,
Ethan says "take out the plugs, then you have a perfect Knife"
I didn't get plugs with mine but that's good enough for me to not miss them.

I have a BK2 because its a brute. I have an imagined use for a brute someday. I have a myriad of knifes for other tasks from removing splitters to butchering a hog but only 1 brute. I like the 1/4" wide concept, the heft of it, its utter indestructibility.

Thanks for the compliments, guys! Ethan's right about many things, but about removing those brass plugs... ;)

On the subject of price - a 2 and a 7 is a versatile package.

The 12 certainly has its merits - and its followers but there is just something about the 2 that requires it to be in a Beckerhead's quiver. That said, if you are going to have a 2 anyway then a 12 might be a tad bit of an overlap that approaches redundancy, hence by suggested combo of a 2 and a 7.

I said all of that to say this: Seeing as you can't not have a Nine ... and seeing as a Tweener or three is all but required anyways ... and once you have an 11 or a 14 around your neck for a while it's hard to imagine not having one ... sooooo, you may as well just get them all!! That's what a true Knife Knut would do. :D:cool::rolleyes:

Haha, thanks for chiming in, and I LoVE the 12. The VZ Grips seem to add a bit of handle weight, I couldn't imagine it being heavier back there, not that I could use without a lot of work on the grips anyway. Might be better with stock scales and weights...I dunno.

I can definitely appreciate any extra means of end user customization.

Silly new guy - this is a Brute (aka BK1).

This is a BK2

See the difference ;)

I won't knock the BK2; but it doesn't get to use that name.

Edited to add a few smileys, so nobody takes this post too seriously

:D:p

micarta changes the balance the same way the 3 brass weights did -- I bet the VZ pulls the balance back a little further, since it's denser than micarta.

You're right.. I had the micarta on before the VZ and it was real nice. If I had to choose, I prefer a bit Blade heavy to handle heavy on the larger blades. Even on that note, I really like the VZ on this, it stays for now.

Like the Boss says...its all compromises,
ya gotta find ur own balance.

Don't own a 2 but I do own the 12. I've handled the 2 but haven't gotten any dirt time with one. For me, I would rather have the extra length of the 12 than the extra thickness of the 2. YMMV.

Please note again the vendor that makes those scales.
