Hey all,
Thought I'd share my work in progress BK-4. I'm trying to assemble a very nice-looking outdoor knife/sheath kit. I'm starting with the very useful BK-4. I plan on stripping it, forcing a patina, replacing the scales, and getting a nice custom leather sheath for it.
Any comments/suggestions/critiques are welcome! This is my first go at this kind of thing.
We'll start with the original knife...
Bits and pieces...
Lovely lady...
Stripping agent applied...
Close-up. This protective coating started to pull up almost instantaneously, and was very easy to brush off...
Naked...
Took some 150 grit to get the hard-to-reach areas...
Then some 600 grit to shine it up a bit...
Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my 3000 grit that I was going to use to really buff it up. Being on deployment and all, it's hard to find any sand-paper laying around, so we'll have to stop at 600 grit. It's shiny enough for me anyway, and I suppose it will keep that "weathered" look.
Forcing a patina on the handle to test it out. I let it sit for 30 min...
I think I layered it a little thick, so it came out a tad sparse for my liking...
So a second coating was applied, this time thinner...
And the results are better...
Now that I'm confident in the agent I've chosen, time to move on to the blade. First coat...
And WOW! I love it! Only 1 coat too, probably gonna stop with that...
I'm definitely pleased...
So that's where I'll leave off for tonight. I'll work on getting some better photos of it. As I progress and add cool things to it, I'll keep yinz updated.
If anyone can recommend a custom leather sheath-maker, I'd be grateful. That's the next thing I have to think about, since it will probably take a while for the whole design, pricing, and making process.
Take care!
