Hey all,

Thought I'd share my work in progress BK-4. I'm trying to assemble a very nice-looking outdoor knife/sheath kit. I'm starting with the very useful BK-4. I plan on stripping it, forcing a patina, replacing the scales, and getting a nice custom leather sheath for it.

Any comments/suggestions/critiques are welcome! This is my first go at this kind of thing.

We'll start with the original knife...

Bits and pieces...

Stripping agent applied...

Close-up. This protective coating started to pull up almost instantaneously, and was very easy to brush off...

Took some 150 grit to get the hard-to-reach areas...

Then some 600 grit to shine it up a bit...

Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my 3000 grit that I was going to use to really buff it up. Being on deployment and all, it's hard to find any sand-paper laying around, so we'll have to stop at 600 grit. It's shiny enough for me anyway, and I suppose it will keep that "weathered" look.

Forcing a patina on the handle to test it out. I let it sit for 30 min...

I think I layered it a little thick, so it came out a tad sparse for my liking...

So a second coating was applied, this time thinner...

And the results are better...

Now that I'm confident in the agent I've chosen, time to move on to the blade. First coat...

And WOW! I love it! Only 1 coat too, probably gonna stop with that...

I'm definitely pleased...

So that's where I'll leave off for tonight. I'll work on getting some better photos of it. As I progress and add cool things to it, I'll keep yinz updated.

If anyone can recommend a custom leather sheath-maker, I'd be grateful. That's the next thing I have to think about, since it will probably take a while for the whole design, pricing, and making process.

Take care!

that's awesome dude.

I would reccomend me as your sheathmaker, but since I can't sell my stuff on here, I really wanna recommend SkyStorm.

Very nice work so far. I like how you think!

As for leather... we have Goose, Skystorm, Balding Eagle

All Beckerheads who love the blades as much as we do, and I can personally attest that all three do great work, depends on what style you're looking for.

MyWifeThinksImCrazy (Nic) also makes some killer sheaths, but he is temporarily ''retired'' from the hide business, or so I hear.

The factory micarta scales are very nice, or if you like wood, TommyTheWho makes some luscious woodys for the Becker line.

I also want to thank you for your service and sacrifices...they are recognized and appreciated. Stay Sharp out there.

@Gaspumps, I used spray-on Klean Strip as the stripper. It's very aggressive, and I'd recommend wearing latex gloves when using it.

@thrillbilly, Thanks for the wishes. I'm countin' down the days till I get to come home. In the mean time, I'm keeping myself distracted with little projects like this.

@Skystorm, I think I have seen that online before. I do like the look of it, but want something with a pouch on the front, much like the sheath it comes with. Something I can throw a Buck 110 or multi-tool in.

He'll modify any sheath design for you. (for a fee I believe)

nice lookin piece. And that horseradish makes it look delicious!

As far as sheaths, Thrillbilly nailed it. Skystorm, mywifethinksimcrazy, goose, and balding eagle are all at the top of there game as far as I'm concerned. However I've only had personal experiences with two of them. (Mwtic and balding e) and I can assure you they are stand up guys and fine craftsmen. Highly recomended!

Now that's how to introduce yourself on the BK&T sub forum!
Wow man, that Machax looks badass!
Thanks for the pics.
Welcome!
