Got the BK-7 out for a while today. I wanted to split off a new hearth board from a piece of red Cedar. I've beat on this knife a good bit over the months I've had it, it really is one tough knife.

This is the first split.

You can see how knotty this Cedar is, did end up with a narrow board for a hearth though.

and if you've ever been curious as to how long the 1095 CV will hold an edge...I have had this knife nearly a year and I used it quite a bit to start with. If you missed that there are a few pages on it here...

a little more on it here....

and a little more here....and I've done even more with it since then.

I have still yet to sharpen this knife...I may hit it with the ceramic side of the DC4 tomorrow now that I'm thinking about it...but as of yet it's still the factory edge.

and that reminded me that I had forgotten to post these taken a while back. I really don't like the point of the BK9 anywhere near as much as I like the point of the BK7...but by damn that knife will sure chop.

Awesome Mist! I remember your first BK7 thread. It pushed me over the top and I ordered my BK7 the next day after I read it. Thanks again!

Hmmm that's some very persuasive pics for the BK9 and BK7... I think I might have to look into getting one...

Thanks Jake, I take it you like the knife as much as I do then ?

I've been really impressed with them... maybe the 7 a little more so because of the tip...but both are awesome tools in their own ways.

How have you found the handles? I saw some review that found the scales became loose after some serious batoning work.

the screws come loose? tighten them. the handles aren't just stuck on there with suction cups :>

possibly add a bit of saran wrap on the thread, or use loctite... they won't again :)

One of the first things I do when I get a knife with removable handle slabs, hit the screws with locktight. Never have had an issue.
Mist, nice pics and way to bust some stuff up. I love your Nietzsche quote.

Good photos, as usual, Mist.

It's amazing how well Beckers hold an edge. The way they do 1095 CroVan is pretty special. That was some seriously knotty cedar — a challenge for any knife.

I can't remember which one it was...but the handle scales of one of them did loosen a little after a good bit of chopping. I then torqued the screws on both knives and neither of them loosened any after that.

Thanks, that not the first stuff that knife has busted either lol.

Thanks man, it one of my favorite Nietzsche quotes.

Thanks Bob, yes they do hold an edge very well! Yeah, it's pretty knotty, I need to see if I can find a section with less knots for a bigger hearth board but that one was good for demonstrating the toughness of this knife :)

Good Stuff man... the bk7's been one of my go-to's lately

Thanks Riley, the BK7 is definitely of of my favorite large knives. I need to order a set of the micarta grips for it and see what they're like.

.

Thanks for the pics. The micarta scales are an upgrade although some hockey tape will also improve the grip.

I had a BK7 in 2003 in Iraq for a short time before I traded it off. Great knife. Had a guy in our company carry a BK9

I know, I'm just hung up on micarta lately, and I like the looks of the scales on the BK77 I think it is.

Interesting, just curious...what did you trade it off for?

The BK7 busts stuff up with the best of them, then can be taken into the kitchen to slice up some pineapple, and make a sausage sandwich.
