First time posting, I am a BK fan. I have the 7 and the 14. Now my 15 and 10 year old boys are wanting one for Christmas. I am having trouble choosing what would be best for them, we are hunters and outdoor people. Any suggestions?

Get a 24 for yourself, give the 14 to the ten year old and get a tweener for the fifteen year old - I'm thinking a 16 or 17.

The 16 is generally thought of as a better woods knife than the 17 because of the full flat grind and drop point. Maybe Santa could bring a 16 for each member of the family!

Santa maybe getting himself 2 also, Mrs. Santa doesn't know that yet. The oldest boy is asking for a 7 like mine.

Get the 10 Y/O a 14 (little hands, but he'll have plenty to grow into). Then get your 15 Y/o a 17, because the clip will most likely appeal to a teen, and also (IMO) the saber grind is tougher than the 16, so he won't have to worry too much breaking it, and it should last him a life time. And go ahead and leave Santa a 16. ;)

Surprise her with a 15 all her own.

The oldest boy is asking for a 7 like mine.

Kinda hard to figure out sons at times. Sometimes they want exactly what Dad has, sometimes something a bit different.

What about the 10? Has he seen it? Similar to the 7 but different.

If he's already expressed an interest in the 7, dunno if he'll be happy with a 16 or 17. The 7 is a 'man-size' knife and a tweener may say to him 'you're still a kid'.

Doing a hand-me down like giving your 14 to the 10yo and your 7 to the 15yo could work. But I dunno at Xmas. Especially if Santa gets a *new* 2!

Again, not knowing them personally like you do, hard to say which.

THey both want there own good knife, my oldest is because I have the 7. I think he would do better with something else.

This is a great recommendation. Now you've just got to figure out whether the 15 y/o really only wants the 7 because you have it or if he genuinely wants one.

You could buy and wrap up a 17, and if there is the slightest bit of disappointment offer to and actually swap your 7 for the 15.

And then go buy yourself a new 7.

But you've also got to figure out just how much disappointment there might be - and whether you are willing to pay that price.

I'd say the 16 then. Since the 16 matches the look of the 2, as does the 14, it's still "Like Father, Like Sons".

Get the 10 year old the BK11. Put scales on it if it's not impressive enough for him. It's the perfect Becker for him to learn with. Let the 15 year old work with your BK7, and let him decide if it's a good blade for him based on experience. If it's not, get him a "tweener". The BK16 is a good choice. Make sure to teach them how to take care of carbon steal, and how to sharpen them. My son is 11, and has an 11(Ethan actually advised him personally on that one), and a 17. He loves them both, and wants a 9, like dad, for Christmas. How can I say no to that...

The 16 is indeed a great choice but if ur older wants a 7, perhaps u can pass your on to him and get urself a 9 and a 16 for the younger one. Both 11 & 14 are great too and they will last a long time.

There are a lot of good options here, but to keep it simple you could just get everyone a 9, including your wife and goldfish =)

Like someone said above Get yourself a 24 and give the 10 year old your 14, and give your 15 year old your 7 and get yourself the 9. The blades will mean much more to them being that they were yours first.

Instead of asking everyone here what they think, why don't you ask them!

It's Christmas, so I think a kid, or an adult should get what they want. Not what the consensus of a motley crew of knife addicts thinks, or wants.

Knowing you want to guide them, ask them to research the net and determine which they like, and talk it over with you. Tell them to watch reviews a read up a bit. Show them where the resources are, and tell them to make up their mind. See where they go, and offer advice. If you're hunters, you should already know what works for you when you gut, and dress out your kill.

This way, they learn how to research and get what they want for Christmas. As well, you might just set the hook in another knife nut.

Have fun,
Doc

buy yourself a 16 now - so the 15YO can learn to like/appreciate it.
if he doesn't, it's a great knife for the 10YO and you can gift the elder boy your 7 -- then get yourself the BK12 (RSK Perseverance Mk2) or 15 (great food prep and animal processing knife)

Thanks all, I ended up ordering my oldest son the BK16 and my youngest a BK11, he is not into big knives yet, and myself a BK15. I ordered them from Coyle Outdoors.

If the oldest is disappointed he did not get a 7, teach him that one needs different knives for different purposes, a bigger one and a smaller one.

That every guy needs a knife like the 16, also Ethan loves the 16, that'll go far.

That will also let him anticipate his larger knife someday, will it be a 7 also, or maybe a 9?

A 15 yr old can mow lawns or shovel snow for knife money, good character builder. He can then get whichever one he wants, and it also will mean a lot to him because he earned it. His dad gave him one, and it's his first, so it's special.
The bigger one he worked for, and it's his "big" knife, so it will be special, too.

I used to make hay for a measly $1 an hour, hard work but it added up and there was no other way to make $$ growing up where I did on a farm. I upgraded from JC Penney "Plainpocket" jeans to actual Levi-brand jeans, like everyone cool wore, and 38 years later it still was the right decision. I paid the difference in price when we bought school clothes every year.

He wont be, he changes his mind more than his undies. He told me the other day, he just wants a BK knife. And asked his aunt for one and she just laughed, that was the only one he could remember.
