BK1 vs. BK9

Hola everyone.

I'm interested in purchasing one of these two fine blades. I am interested in the differences in these two. I like that the BK1 is a quarter of an inch thick and 9.5" long, but I like the bowie profile of the BK9 and the pommel and sheath on it.

I think I'll be going with the BK9 but it's kind of back and forth for me. Is there anyone out there that has a BK9 and wishes they had the BK1, or vice versa? I need a good fixed blade, I'm in the Marines and who knows, I may get deployed some time soon ;)

I don't have one of each to compare, but I did recently buy a BK9. After working with this thing a bit I wouldn't worry about the slight additional thickness of the BK1. Anything you can't do with the BK9 probably requires an air tool. :D

I'd go with whichever shape you prefer. They seem to be comparable in every area.

I've got the BK1 and BK7 (+BK2+BK6), The BK1 feels alot
better in my hand, and I think would be better for clearing
brush (curved blade), Tho also you have to take alittle more
care when you sharpen it.

Tho just to change bquinlan words alittle if you can't do
it with a BK2, You need a power-tool! I don't think any
of them would fail you.

If you deside your interested in the BK1 let me know,
I've got a user I would sell pretty cheap.

And you may want to look at the Busse's before you buy
iether, They are alot of money but they are GOOD knives.
But I still like the Beckers handles better.

You like Becker's handles better? Wow, the one thing I liked about the Busse's when compared to Becker's line is the handle. I think I'd prefer a Becker in a scalloped micarta type deal or G10. Ofcourse I haven't yet handled a BK&T yet so who knows.

I've seen the post about the custom G10 scales.. I forget who made them, but if you're out there, do you make thicker micarta scales too? Or perhaps just thicker G10s. I have big hands.

Anyhow, I ordered a BK9 due to the better sheath and the pommel was an added plus. I actually almost ordered a RKAT but because the blade was only .188 or someting, I passed. I think that the parkerized finish on the RKAT (also on Newt Livesay's knives) would hold up better in the long term. Not to mention the fact that you could easily refinish your blade again after you've scraped it all to hell, but I wanted a thicker (~ .25) profile blade so I went with the BK9.

Without handling it yet, I think a BK9 with a parkerized finish and micarta handles would be perfect.

Thanks for your input

I would be interested to hear, What you think
of it (the handle especaily) when you get it. :)

I prefer the Busses except for the handle,
I don't have big hand but it feels like
the Busses where made for "the little people"
or something. And I almost HAVE to wear gloves
for any hard choping....Then there in the
Busse pinky but that is only part of the other problem.

Note: Busse Pinky is where a Busse you are choping with
slips up your hand till your pinky is crushed by the
bottom Talon hole. :barf:

Well, I cannot speak for the BK-1 or a Busse, cause I've never used one. But, I have a BK-9 and it is one heck of a knife. It is a good chopper and for me at least, the blade is about as thick as I would ever go. I like the sheath... would be a good place to put a nice thin bladed slippie or a leatherman in for your small blade needs. I have also handled the BK-7 and decided that the 9 would fit my needs better. My needs: a large chopper that resides in my truck, looks pretty cool to boot, would do nicely as a lashed to one's pack knife for a camping trip. It is a little too big to do fine work, but then again, that's why there is a pocket on the sheath!
Get one, you will not be disappointed.

Atrick-Pay: If you still have this Brute around and are willing to sell, please email me! primitiveguy@hotmail.com I'm currently undecided between the Brute and the Combat Bowie, but price is always a consideration too! Maybe a used one here and a used one there can allow me to buy BOTH! :)

Thanks!

I have a Camillus/Becker BK-9 (as well as a BK-2 Campanion), and I can say, without reservation, that you WILL be impressed with the QUALITY of the BK-9. This is a knife that handles very nicely, and will serve you well.

As far as the grip (handle) of the BK line of knives go, when I had my BK-9 "on the way", I THOUGHT that I would NEED to replace the scales with the thinner (G-10) ones that Bill Siegle offers, but I have found that the handle of my 2 Beckers fits MY hand perfectly.

Hi,

I do have both, the BK 1 & 9, and like them both. However, I think the BK9 is more versatile and feel that the design has cultimated from an evolutionary process that has resulted in a real usable big knife. Still the brute is nice too, get both!

Hello All,

I am currently looking to purchase either the BK7 or the BK9 (leaning towards the BK9) and from everyone's rave reviews, looks like I'll have no problems with performance...but I was just curious if anyone's ever had problems with the sheath? I read a post in the Busse forum that a gentleman had a problem with his sheath on his BK7. Has anyone experienced this also? I'm sure it was just a fluke, but I was just curious and hoped you could help me out.

Thanks for your time!

Hey Catatonic

Although I really hate to encourage anyone to spend less money with BK&T, If i had to make this choice it would be the BK9 The BK9 has a lot better balance, is lighter weight, has a quieter sheath and is much less expensive. I like to think that the Becker line has gotten better as it has matured (kinda like Becker himself.....PLEASE hold the laughter). Maybe Evolved would be a better way to put it. The 9 really is the first big becker after I actually started listening to Jerry Fisk's knives instead of Jerry...Jerry's blades are even more eloquent than the national living treasure himself ! [I may not be there yet Brother ,and, I may never catch up, but I am Working on it.]

Seriously I really think you will get more and greater use from the BK9 and you will save money which I encourage you to spend on the new BK10.

All Best

Well, now I have a BK-7 on the way from another trade, so that now makes 3 Beckers I own (BK-2, BK-9), and I think I may have to get one of the new BK-10's one of these days...Small, medium, and large...Just like my SOG Seal Pup, Seal 2000, and Tigershark!.).

These darn Becker knives are habit-forming!!!.:D.

Ethan,

It's good to see here mingling with your customers! :)

How would you say the BK10 compares to the BK2? I'm looking for a small knife comto go with my BK9 and I was going to get the Campanion until I saw the BK10. I noticed the BK10 is not as thick as the BK2 but how close are is performance between the two?

Thanks,

Chris

Hey Chris

If you don't mind I will answer with a bit of history. When I first introduced the Campanion I took it to shows in three thicknesses (very primitive market research) 1/4, 3/16ths, and 1/8 in. Of the people who picked it up ie. those attracted to it almost all preferred the thickest. My own preferenc was the mid thickness and I think it is still the best balance of strength and slice. If you really think about it most smallish cheater bars that are made from high strength steels are thinner than the new slim, trim BK10.
In many ways the BK10-Crewman is a BK2- Campanion optimized for military life, but it is still a tremendous field knife. It will whittle, field dress, slice and dice with the best of them and come back for more. The balance of the Crewman is really nice. Thanks to the thinner stock and new skeletonised tang my prototype weighs in at only about 12 1/2 oz.
I really do not think that will be any real performance differences, although I expect that a theoretician or two may try to find some, I am just revelling in the updated version of my original concept.
Thanks for the question...

All Best...

I just received my first BK&T knife in the mail yesterday and I'm VERY IMPRESSED! :)

It's the BK1-Brute and will work extremely well as a chopper for my BOB. I'm actually so impressed, I just ordered up a BK-9 Combat Bowie for similar use, but more than likely will carry it on my belt.

If things keep going like this, the Companion BK-2 will soon join the others and now I'm going to have to check out the BK-10 to see if that's something to start drooling over! ;) The BK-7 may find a place to fit in as well.

Good quality knives at common man prices found by a knife knutt allow said knife knutt to become a veritable 'collector.' :)

Thanks Ethan! :D

Ethan,

If you might need someone to "test" one of your new BK-10 Crewman knives, let me know, and I'll send you my address for a free "sample".:).

Hey Plainsman

Thanks for the nice words on the Brute... Methinks you will like the Combat Bowie even more for it's versatility....it not only chops well, the balance will encourage you to use it for the little stuff too.
Thank you too for the kind words about our quality... I am very proud to think that in Tac knives that we are one hell of a value.
I used to be quite a Cognac snob(maybe I still am) and Cognac taught me some interesting lessons...one is that above a certain level there is no clear best. My old favorite was about fifty bucks a bottle and to my pallette there was no clear better until you got above a hundred and a half. Even then the Delamain was right in there....sooo I like to think we are the Delamain pale and dry of the tactical knife world...a damn comfortable place ... that is some FINE booze. Thanks for giving me a chance to toot the horn and beat the chest a bit.... I am really proud of the Knives that Camillus makes from my designs!!
If you are going to buy a short Becker get the Crewman first. IMHO it DOES represent an evolutionary improvement over the Campanion.

All Best.....

Ethan

Hey Mr. Glockman..
If, I repeat IF I could talk WILL into it and I promise I will Try to do so MY vote is that you should get a tester ! Holding your breath until it occurs is probably not advisable! Nice Try and many thanks (truly) for your continued support. I do notice that you say a lot of nice things about us and I do appreciate it !!!
All Best...
