BK11 Sheath Problem

Big hunting time up here in the northeast... I had success with my regular BK11 as a field dressing blade so I bought a BK11 in Carbon San Mai because I have always been intrigued by it. I carry it on my neck using paracord just like the normal BK11. I got back from hunting and made dinner and grabbed a beer. I reached for my BK11 CSM to open the local microbrew (a locally made Amber Ale, absolutely fantastic) and it wasn't there. Apparently it fell right out of the sheath hanging vertically around my neck. I've looked everywhere around the house but it's not here. I would have heard it if it fell in the house anyway...it must have fallen out in the woods. The sheath retention was OK, but not great, a little wiggle like my normal BK11, but I never thought it would fall out. I also don't know how I didn't feel the weight loss around my neck when it fell out...I should have, but I am wearing a lot of layers due to how cold it is up here near the Canadian border.

Man, that's a bummer. That's an expensive blade to just lose, and I didn't even get to try it out field dressing. Ka-Bar should look into this and see if some sheaths might have retention problems. After all, it is marketed as a neck knife, and it's sort of ridiculous if a neck knife falls out of the sheath when worn as it is intended to. Just want to save others from this same problem.

I just tried my regular 1095 BK11 in the CSM sheath that was still around my neck and shook it up and down. Sure enough the regular BK11 fell out within 5 shakes....wasn't shaking hard either. What a bummer....that's definitely what happened I guess. I must have received a lemon sheath that wasn't molded quite right. Check your sheath before you wear your knife in a vertical position where it could fall out...don't want anyone else to lose their knife due to an issue like this.

i just got an 11 for my birthday from my fiance, I noticed the same thing as you, the retention is a tad less to be desired, but I never plan to wear around my neck, its either on my belt, in my pocket or in my bag, I also got the idea from a post on here to put a shock cord around the bottle opener for extra retention

I have had my regular bk11 fall out the sheath when running hard a couple times before i started using a paracord type safety, it keeps the knife from falling out and makes it so someone cant yank the knife off of you. i had issues of it falling out when doing something vigorous before it was ever stripped and afterwards it seemed even more likely. after the strip it rattled in the sheath as well, before the strip it did not.

Sorry you lost such a sweet blade, that sucks big time! try this out next time; just push the 2 knots thru the first hole like so, then push them out before you draw the knife. its simple and effective.... well i like it anyways :)

Man...it's pretty discouraging. I could have almost bought two Izula's for the price of the CSM and it won't wiggle even a tiny bit in its sheath.

That bad boy falls out under your close and then you fall or even just bend over and you're going to have an issue real quick. I know neck knives are popular, but they are such a bad idea. Between hanging yourself with para, rope burns durring bow season, or falling out an dstabbing yourself...Well, you get the picture.

If I thought I had to use a kneck knife I would wear it handle up on a bead chain or break free cord attachment. Even that isn't a real good idea though.

I think Ka-Bar should look into modifying the sheath design so that the knife fits more securely. It really isn't OK for it to be a gamble to use the factory sheath. I don't understand why the sheath hasn't been fixed, seems like everyone has sheath rattle. The Izula is $45 and comes with a sheath that holds the knife extremely securely with no worry for it falling out.

I hope I don't get jumped on for this, but I'm a little sick and tired of having to work "special rigs" on every BKT so that they work properly.

"running hard" What is that? My mind can't comprehend that concept...

Must have been out of beer and had to get to the store before it closed and the car wouldn't start.

I hear that. I have two BK14s and I'm not going to carry either until I bend some kydex for them. If it's not the retention it's the sheath dulling the knife.

My 14 fits very securely in the factory sheath, I can spin it around like a windmill with a piece of para cord tied to the sheath and the knife doesn't budge... Sorry for your loss, but next time slip it in your pocket for "hard running". To me a neck knife is something you wear around camp for quick access to a small knife, I wouldn't want to fall on the thing while running through the woods anyway..

I wasn't running at all, I was walking through the woods hunting. It's really kind of a sad phenomenon that should be addressed.

I do a light jog 3-5 times a week, jog to and from my daughter school, a mile+ 1 away. and a hard run 2-3 times a week, i run as fast as possible for 1 mile. Its good for the heart, and i hear it will keep me from becoming a fat old geezer so thats a plus :)

And i didnt loose mine i think there was some confusion, when running or jogging i will still keep my knife on, around my neck as always (soon as K9-handler sends it back to me :)) This thing is a neck knife, called the becker necker, ill be damned if i cant use it as such! A little common sense can go a long way. my safety knot eliminates all worry of stabbing myself during falling or loosing it when running or having it yanked from my body.

just be careful and smart about it.

Nyoutdoors, the new bk9 rig comes fantastic i think! And i loved the look and design for the bk11 sheath, and a couple easy mods make it extreamly useful and perfect as is. Now the Bk2 i think deserves a good after market sheath, its a tank, it deserves a secure home! the bk2 is really a cheap knive for its size and usefulness and i would prefer to keep it at its price. its the gateway becker for most beckerheads. the cheaper price brings most of us in (mine was the bk11 but anyways) and hooks us on becker knives. A more expensive sheath would drive cost up and push even more people towards other lines of knives. my opinion anyway !

I'd like to see the 2 come in a cordura sheath like the other big boys, but that's just me.

As far as the 11's stock sheath, shove a foam ear plug down there. Problem solved. If you strip it send another one down if it starts to rattle. Or, pay a very low price and get yourself a piece of kydex and a tek-lok. Or a slightly higher price and get a piece of cow hide and put it in your hide pocket.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Hope you can retrace and find it!

As far as insurance, a little piece of stretch cord is all it takes.

I wonder if its possible to slightly heat the sheath with a heat gun and smash it a bit to get a tighter fit. I really am not fond of wrapping paracord around my neck, break away lanyards can be found cheap and will keep from pulling your head off of your shoulders should you fall or get tangled in rotating equipment. I like the idea of the retention strap or the paracord retainer might try that retention with a ranger band.
