Ok so time to give these girls a run for their money, make em earn that coveted spot in my left ass pocket. On a dark and dreary day, three knives entered, only one could leave King of my pocket. let the battle begin...
first up,. feathersticks. who could make the thinnest curls that would easily catch fire fast. Each carve up some feathers on the same stick. The barkies convex didnt allow for very thin curls. The convex is hard to control and either I cut to deep, or the feather was cut off completely. Very disappointing, but then again im not used to full convex so it may take some practice
Next up the bk11. The full flat grind with convex edge made short work of this chore. good curls and control the whole way through
But i gotta give this challenge to the FIN, control was EXCEPTIONAL and the curls, well the pic speaks for its self.
Next up (it actually happened first in real time) batoning. Which knife can split the best? Well in this challenge the Barkies convex helped a ton. The shoulders of the full convex allowed for great splitting since there was very little contact and friction
The Bk11 struggle in this challenge because of the full flat grind. There was far too much friction. It did baton the whole way through, not like it wouldnt or couldnt, just didnt do it as well.
The FIN, excelled again. The shoulders of the saber made batoning (EVEN WITH A FOLDER) a cake walk. A couple of taps and it was through.
Now we got our tinder, lets get it started. Next up, firesteel scraping. This challenge is going to be null, since i cheated. The becker and the barkie both through sparks the way they were, the FIN did not, so i went ahead and squared a part of the spine. After that, holy crap did the fin throw sparks, so we will call this a push
Now onto some different stuff. How about hole drilling? The bk11 was up first and damn did it drill. I tried to spend equal time with each one, deepest hole wins, and the bk11 beat em out. The barkie did the worst here. It started well, but once it was started it kept sticking and making awkward cuts. The FIN did well again, just not as well at the 11
Lastly, i tried clubbing, or batoning across the grain. These little guys all did poorly, but then again i wanted to give them a challenge and after a boat load of whacks on each one, they werent very far. I could have continued i guess but the rain picked up.
as for field sharpening and edge retention they all held their edges. each had a small reflective spot but nothing to write home about. Sharpen was quick and easy.
So after all of this....which will be crowned the new champion?
well, the results are in and the winner is
The KABAR FIN. I just cant believe how well it did almost EVERYTHING. Reminds me alot of the bk2, drop point, high shoulder. man oh man was this a great buy. The coating even held up better than expected. Now kabar, heed my words. Make these things in the USA, charge the extra $10 itll cost to do so, and you got yourself a LEGENDARY folder that will be undisputed for the price market and utility.
Edit for reconsideration:
Since second place will go to the fixed blade that can do what the folder cant (not much) I gotta give it to the bk11 and that will be strapped to my edc pack. Looks like the barkie is going to the exchange......
