Your going to make a fatboy carry a knife? WTF ;)

SAM_3702.jpg

Dude you are my inspiration. I wanna carry my bk2, and an edc is a great way to do it, and I also like how that izula hangs out there, so i think i will steal that idea as well....

always a trend setter.....

You can carry your BK11 and I'm pretty sure the Bravo River Necker will fit this way also....Use some paracord and hook it to the molle.

Hope I didnt HiJack you thread.....

dude i dont care about that stuff, i like conversation thats why i come to a knife forum.

Anyway, i did a small mod to the FIN in order to make sure it can hang out side in the brush. I squared a small part of the spine and she now showers sparks on unsuspecting tinder piles.

Ok so time to give these girls a run for their money, make em earn that coveted spot in my left ass pocket. On a dark and dreary day, three knives entered, only one could leave King of my pocket. let the battle begin...

451207289_photobucket_65384_.jpg

first up,. feathersticks. who could make the thinnest curls that would easily catch fire fast. Each carve up some feathers on the same stick. The barkies convex didnt allow for very thin curls. The convex is hard to control and either I cut to deep, or the feather was cut off completely. Very disappointing, but then again im not used to full convex so it may take some practice
451207289_photobucket_65378_.jpg

Next up the bk11. The full flat grind with convex edge made short work of this chore. good curls and control the whole way through
451207289_photobucket_65377_.jpg

But i gotta give this challenge to the FIN, control was EXCEPTIONAL and the curls, well the pic speaks for its self.
451207289_photobucket_65376_.jpg

Next up (it actually happened first in real time) batoning. Which knife can split the best? Well in this challenge the Barkies convex helped a ton. The shoulders of the full convex allowed for great splitting since there was very little contact and friction
451207289_photobucket_65379_.jpg

The Bk11 struggle in this challenge because of the full flat grind. There was far too much friction. It did baton the whole way through, not like it wouldnt or couldnt, just didnt do it as well.
451207289_photobucket_65382_.jpg

The FIN, excelled again. The shoulders of the saber made batoning (EVEN WITH A FOLDER) a cake walk. A couple of taps and it was through.
451207289_photobucket_65381_.jpg

Now we got our tinder, lets get it started. Next up, firesteel scraping. This challenge is going to be null, since i cheated. The becker and the barkie both through sparks the way they were, the FIN did not, so i went ahead and squared a part of the spine. After that, holy crap did the fin throw sparks, so we will call this a push
451207289_photobucket_65301_.jpg

451207289_photobucket_65374_.jpg

Now onto some different stuff. How about hole drilling? The bk11 was up first and damn did it drill. I tried to spend equal time with each one, deepest hole wins, and the bk11 beat em out. The barkie did the worst here. It started well, but once it was started it kept sticking and making awkward cuts. The FIN did well again, just not as well at the 11
knifetest.jpg

Lastly, i tried clubbing, or batoning across the grain. These little guys all did poorly, but then again i wanted to give them a challenge and after a boat load of whacks on each one, they werent very far. I could have continued i guess but the rain picked up.
451207289_photobucket_65394_.jpg

as for field sharpening and edge retention they all held their edges. each had a small reflective spot but nothing to write home about. Sharpen was quick and easy.

So after all of this....which will be crowned the new champion?

451207289_photobucket_65392_.jpg

well, the results are in and the winner is
451207289_photobucket_65391_.jpg

The KABAR FIN. I just cant believe how well it did almost EVERYTHING. Reminds me alot of the bk2, drop point, high shoulder. man oh man was this a great buy. The coating even held up better than expected. Now kabar, heed my words. Make these things in the USA, charge the extra $10 itll cost to do so, and you got yourself a LEGENDARY folder that will be undisputed for the price market and utility.

Edit for reconsideration:

Since second place will go to the fixed blade that can do what the folder cant (not much) I gotta give it to the bk11 and that will be strapped to my edc pack. Looks like the barkie is going to the exchange......

Wow great write up Clich, I was contemplating a new folder, and had overlooked the fin due to the odd profile. I'll definitely be checking it out though.

Excellent review clich, I bet in the long run the two fixed blades would win the battle....

Get your fatboy yet?

Great job, brother Clich. Very well done.

Oh, and the Fin Knives are to be discontinued. Get'em while you can.

Yes you'll see some pics in the chat thread soon.

I was looking for an edc, I love fixed but just can't always take one, or need one. The fin wins out because of its ability to do what's necessary and still be edc friendly. I still will carry a fixed on the fatboy. But the fin will get the majority of the work. Its earned its spot

Yeah, well thems the breaks, unfortunately.

Seems Mr. Janda's designs just didn't have that "look" that most folks are willing to spend time examining. They have been slow sellers from the start, and haven't gained much speed.

They are some damn good knives, even if made in Taiwan, the quality of the build is quite good. The design is even better.

Don't worry, they will be around for a while, if you wanna get some more, you can, and I would say that come Dec or Jan, most dealers will be putting them on the "discount" rack.

discounts are even better, i think ill get a few when their on the clearance shelves. So, since theres room in the kabar folder lineup, how about a REAL bk2 folder, so i dont have to pretend? :D

Nope, no such critter even being thought of at this moment.

Nice job Clich, I really enjoyed the photos and the tests. The Fin leaves me cold, too tactical looking for me, but it's cool to know it's a good tool.

I have been really hesitant about getting one but I think you convinced me. Its a lot sturdier than it looks in most pics online. Think you could post a pic or two next to another familiar folder? I've never held a bk14/11 so its hard to get the size comparison.
