OFFICIAL ENTRY!!

So, yesterday, I found my first piece of fatwood at my grandparents house. Ironically, it was the best piece!
I used the 14 to scrape away the top layers and find the resinous gold underneath the outer layer and got this.

For this contest, I thought I would share my first experience with using fatwood as a fire-starting material

It is just an old match case I had in Cub Scouts. It has a small firesteel on the bottom and is holding some twine and Vaseline-soaked cotton balls. Attached to it, via red paracord, is the fireteel from an old Coghlan's magnesium firestarter that I had broken when I was practicing out back...I know right? I was pissed...So I just took the fire steel and tied it to the match case; it works well even though it is a fairly lame set-up.

I plan on using this setup until I invest in a new firesteel. I can take some pics of it if you would like. I really need to sit down and make a new fire kit now since I found a ton of fatwood yesterday. Heck, I need to reorganize everything at this point :p

Also, on that side note, I have been refreshing that dang Tomar's page for eons now...I was hoping that they would have been available by the time I got back home from backpacking. To my dismay, nothing has changed. I swear I am going to go nuts...I needs my scales :D

that's what I thought it looked like...it works, it's utilizing what you had...that's win/win in my book. no ''lame'' that I can see.

Why thank you sir. My only problem with it is that the firesteel is really small and it can sometimes be a chore to strike it properly or comfortably. Though that may be, it isn't too big of a deal.

get you a nice knob or rod of hardwood...drill a hole, superglue/epoxy that firesteel in the hole. Sand and polish to suit ya, instant ''custom firesteel''

Sounds like a plan to me, but I think I should wait and do that on a rod worth the effort. I think I'll go to KSF and get a blank ferro rod.

Here's my official entry
I carry my 14 everyday but it doesn't always get used. More often than not, I'm using it to prepare snacks for my kids.
Peanut butter on bananas is on the menu for today.
