BK16 or 17

so I have decided to get the bk7, there are just too many people who seem to love the knife for me to get something else. so with that knife I want something smaller. the bk16 and 17 are perfect size for me, I just don't know what style will be better for me. this blade will be for finer tasks, maybe a skinning blade as well, but I want to be able to beat the hell out of it if need be. any opinion would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say go with the 17 for its similarity to the glorious 7. I rather love my seven and would like eventually to get a seventeen as well. He'll just at least one of every Becker actually.

I think you can't go wrong with either. The 17 has a pointer tip so if you feel you need that feature go with it but the 16 will do it all and the tip is a little more sturdy.

I like the 17 for the way it matches the 7, but love the 16 for its drop-point and all around usefulness.
If you're going to look at it, slice with it, or use it for piercing/digging/drilling I'd go 17. (Don't have one yet, but love my 7.)
If it'll be a skinner, beater, and all around work knife, the 16 is hard to beat. (Do have one - it's my go-to work knife.)

You can get the 17 if you like.............. But I personally prefer the other option.

Holy crap Dex.... I thought I had an addiction ... Lol great collection... Those saber 16's are awesome... Like mini bk2's.

To the OP I do not have a 17 but feel confident in saying that the 16 is a great companion blade to any of the larger beckers. It is my main blade in the woods... Granted there is also a bk4 or a bk9 along with it but for everyday chores in the woods the 16 is hard to beat.... Just my 2 cents

Can anyone comment on the balance between the 16 & 17... My 16 with micarta is the most comfortable knife I have and the balance is amazing

ill probably go with the 16 because it seems like it has a stronger tip. I probably will not be batonig with it, but want to know that I can if I have too

The 16/ drop point is likely stouter that the 17--but--but--the tip on the 17, as is the whole spine of the 17, is pretty stout as well. Really stout for a clip point, yet still very pointy. I don't have any pic's right now, but I may be able to snap a few for you after work tomorrow. Either way, you'll end up with a great knife.

BTW--I have Ipe scales on mine (made by Tmmythewho) and they make it an exceptional knife. I have Ipe scales for my 7 as well--and they both are in kydex sheaths by Azwelke.

I prefer the 16 - because I prefer drop points to concave clips.
OTOH, you can always mod your 16 to a straight clip so it better matches your 7 if you feel an absolute need for that kind of behavior.
(or just get a 12 - so you can have 2 drop points!)

I'm a BK16 man.
It just feels great to me.
Don't get me wrong, the 17 is a great knife, but my hand prefers the 16.

I love my 17 , but I also own a 15 , and my 16 is on the way. Would be a hard choice I guess. And , the best knife is the one you have on you.

My .02.

I would either pair a bk9 with a bk16/17 or I would pair a bk7 with a bk14 (w/ scales). This way you have more size contrast for a wider range of chores. As for your question. I own both a 16 and 17 and tend to use the 16 a lot more.

In the end don't sweat it too much... You will end up with all of em eventually anyways:). Good luck.

The flat ground 16 is a classic that everyone should own. You can branch out from there, but you should have at least one 16. It pairs well with axe, saw, big knife or machete and as a stand alone blade is quite nearly perfect.
