I traded (from a guy not from here), a bk16 with the tip a little bit bent, he states this is a regular problem with Becker knives, I sharpened the knife yesterday and it looks a little bit better. Just wanted to hear if you guys have had the same experience with bk16 knives. Maybe I should've just kept my esee4 :(
Took a before/after pic to show the damage

Yeah, that's what I thought. Of course, I can't even dream about ka-bar helping me since the knife is stripped.

It doesn't look bent to me... just that it may have an uneven grind... which IS fairly common on BK's.. My 7 and 9 were both quite uneven towards the top. So much so that it made it look like the 7 was bent... but it wasn't.

1095 shouldn't bend... it'll flex until it snaps.

Makes sense, the left grind is uneven. Thanks a ton Uncle Malice.

Hey Martin Trg......

I think Uncle Malice is dead on here........The sharpening process is free hand and as I know from doing a bunch of final sharpening it ain't perfect.....Ever.... The real question is does the knife PERFORM......

You can always spend an hour or two making the final grinds perfect but, if the factory spent that time the knife would be prohibitively expensive........ If it cuts like a screaming witch it is OK by me........ If I buy a Fisk or Crowell custom for mucho dinars I WILL give them endless crap about even slightly uneven grinds but, on a production blade I just want it to cut....... BTW I paid a hundred TRILLION dollars to Crowell to haft a blade and had to get somebody else to sharpen the SOB......... Of course they were Kenyan Dollars.....He he he......

Wow! Ethan Becker himself. First of all I'm a big fan of the bk2, what a knife! Second I don't want you to think that I was by any means judging the quality of your knives, I shot you guys an email but because the coating has been stripped the knife is no longer covered. I can live with an uneven grind, I like the knife. Heck, I even let my esee4 knife go and replaced it with the bk16. When I grow up I wanna be a becker head :D

Thank you for your input.

Pretty sure if it breaks they will take care of you coating or not.

tricky.

second hand, modded, and possibly abused, but they do tend to come through if you're a good guy.

Call Kabar and ask them.

If you are still not satisfied, shoot me an email, I'll trade your bent 16 for one of my brand new, just stripped 16's with one of my edges on it. I got a few that I stripped, and sharpened, but ain't cut nuthin' with.

Let me know.

I just got off the phone with ka-bar and yep, I was surely told that I'm on my own on this one. Not that I'm complaining, I knew it was a long shot.
Thanks a ton for the offer Moosez45, pm inbound.

Thats unfortunate. I am currently trying to decide on another ESEE 4 or try a BK16, and this has me thinking. This is a win for the ESEE on the warranty. I would have hoped that Ka-bar would have taken care of you. Thankfully though there are GREAT members on here that are willing to help you out.

Wait... stripping the paint from the blade voids a warranty?

I can understand if you stripped it, then it rusted out and you wanted it replaced... but it doesn't sound like stripped paint has anything to do with this situation.

In either case, I wouldn't even be looking for a replacement. Just put a new edge on the knife.

The real question is does the knife PERFORM....

I agree... that doesn't appear to be much of a problem to my eyes. I'd sharpen it up and use the heck out of it. It would be much more hassle to package it up and send it off for a replacement or trade.

Quick Uncle Malice, make another post! You're at #666

The other thing to remember, with the Esee you're paying half as much again on top of the cost of the Becker. Not bashing on Esee, I carry them too, just saying for the price you have a hard time beating a Becker.

I hear you. Just like to hear when the stories turn out the other way in favor of the consumer. With that being said. After a few days of chewing on thread after thread and picture after picture of ESEE 4 vs BK16, I took the plunge and Bought a BK16 from dale over at www.the-knife-connection.com

Now I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of my new knife!!!

Not really. There is nothing functionally wrong with it, its all aesthetics. For that , I can't find fault in Kabar's decision. I kinda figured what they said, thats why I offered what I did. I don't care if the tips off some, and if I do for some reason, I have others to play with.

ESEE's NQA warranty is awesome, but you should hear some of the stories Jeff and Mike tell about the dbags that call in wanting a new knife. The NQA warranty originally started to cover guys that broke their knife while USING it. Now, its turned into a circus of blowtorches and bandsaws.
