BK2 and BK14 - simple sharpener

Amazon has a tri-stone Smith's system for $20 if you want a cheap stone system that will give you a good range to learn to do it by hand

or if you REALLY want to do pull through, for $25, you can get a Smith's adjustable angle on amazon (adusts from 14-25 degrees), which you should be able to match to the becker grind

BUT I still prefer my lansky..You can get the 5 stone kit (with natural stones) for $30..seriously, I can put a mirror polish on my edges with this kit...that said, I have noticed a fair amount of wear on the stones over the course of sharpening all my various knives multiple times. Also, it is a pretty slow process with the natural stones. To do it all over again i would get the Lansky with diamond stones and call it good and skip the rest of the sharpeners..

Oh, one other thought, the spiderco sharpmaker is basically a crock stick sharpener. If you don't want to spend $40 on it, I know smiths and lansky make something very similar for $14-20

The BK2 is such a great blade to convex. The sandpaper + mouse pad mentioned above works great and it's almost impossible to screw up.

arky stones are perfectly fine. diamond plates don't really last long when used on metal, . they're very aggressive and take too much steel off your knife if you're not careful, well at least compared to stones. i use diamond plates as flatteners for my stones.

OK, well I did it. I went ahead with the Lansky Deluxe set and got the table stand to go with it... $41 shipped from Amazon. Hopefully will have it by end of next week. Thanks so much for everyone's input. I always sucked with traditional flat stones, keeping that correct and uniform angle is crucial. This should give me an excellent working edge for an amateur. Will let you know how it goes when I get it. :)

Thanks for all the advice. This forum is invaluable, I learn something new everyday and just enjoy the discussions and knowledge base that's found here.

I have a coarse DMT diasharp and it puts on a hell of an edge. Thinking seriously about getting of my Spyderco benchstones and switching to all DMT.

Good luck with the Lansky.

Let us know how it goes.

if you wanna see how a real knife sharpener does it (applies to kitchen knives and other knives....)

watch murray carter's videos on youtube or jon broida of japanese knife imports on sharpening.

those guys know what they're talking about and i learned most of what i know from watching them.

Bottom of a coffee cup or the top of a car window works great for me. ;)
Seriously.

Nice! It is a little funny to use at first and it will take some practice to get the stones on the rods properly (you will see what I mean when you get it), but you ought to be putting razor edges on knives in no time! Best tip I can give you on it is to make sure you have the two clamping edges parallel to eachother when putting pressure on your knife to make sure it is in there nice and tight. You don't want the blade to wiggle at all when clamped in.

I have (among other systems) the DMT Aligner with coarse, fine, extra and ultra fine. Works great, but like any other clamp system, its pretty hard to get the clamp lined up in the exact same spot the next time you need to use it. I have some DMT bench stones also. I prefer diamond stones for sharpening.
Mouse pad and sandpaper work great, too.
I think every knife user should learn the Sharpie trick for freehand sharpening.

I have used the Smth and Gerber pull through sharpeners on my knives, and have one of the Smiths in my BOB. They work OK for field use to touch up the edge, but will not work as good as a stone. I see them as a field expedient sharpener only.

Wow interesting... I'll try this coffee cup method and see how it goes. I assume it's sort of an impromptu Extra Fine "touch-up stone"? The car window must be UltraUltra Fine?

Great idea in a pinch...

No different than a stone..perhaps even better and cheaper than everything.
I sharpen my machete and various other knives on my window as well...back in the old days they would sharpen knives on those old crocks...a coffee cup is just the same as those ceramic sharpeners..same composition.
