Will,

As you know (since you helped me locate it last year), I have an original BK&T Brute. Now I've ordered a Camillus - Becker Companion and TacTool. From what I've read and comments you've shared, I expect the fit and finish to far exceed the older offerings. Certainly the 0170-6C steel and GV6H handles will be a step up. Hope to add the Brute later and then I'll probably sell my original.

BTW I received a nice e-mail from Tom Walz today. Seems there's a "special" Talon with my name on it awaiting a sheath. Sounds great!!!!!!

Sorry I missed you the other night.

Well the BK2 has been here since last week with the TacTool due in a few more weeks.

I called Will to tell him that I too was impressed with the fit, finish and sharpness. The black coating is really nice...wouldn't mind it on some of my firearms

!

What is interesting is to compare it to the Mission MKPS medium size that I have. No question that the Companion is in that class and at it's price a real bargain. I haven't had the chance to work them side by side yet but I expect them to be comparable with the differnt blade geometry making the biggest difference. Both handles are very comfortable although unquestionably the Mission is higher tech and slimmer.

Bottom line: BK2 highly recommended as an inexpensive medium length sharpened prybar!

Is the edge angle (included angle ?) as ... obtuse (?) as it would appear in the pictures? It looks like it would be an even thicker edge than, say, the Cold Steel SRK, or the Fallkniven S1.

I'm very curious about this, as I'm starting to consider buying the Companion (or maybe the Tac-Tool) as a Jeep knife.

0.063 inches ?! As in 1/16th of an inch?!

Geez! That seems THICK! Can you say how that compares with something like the CS SRK?

WOW! Prybar starts to sound right!

You need the bevel width as well as the edge thickness in order to judge the profile. My thinned out Basic for example is .055" thick just behind the edge. However the included angle of the edge is only 20 degrees. The bevel is very wide, 0.155 " .

OK. In that case, how wide is the bevel, too? Cougar? Or anyone?

Oops ... I didn't measure that before I sharpened it. I consider the edge angle unimportant because it's so easy to change. However, in this case I didn't change the angle when I sharpened it, not deliberately anyway, and it's now about .015" (.0381mm) wide -- that's holding the calipers parallel to the edge bevel. I think Will said what edge angle they're sharpening to in a reply to my review; follow the link in my last post.

It's thick and obtuse; it's intended for heavy use. You could make the secondary bevel as acute as you want, of course, but on such a heavy knife how acute an edge do you want? I'm going to try making it somewhat more acute, but I don't think I'll make it as thin as an Opinel....

I didn't give the weight in my review because I don't have a scale that's accurate in that range, but Will has said it's 15 ounces (426g). I think those of who've reviewed it haven't emphasized the weight enough to bring that across to everyone ... people are comparing it to other 5" knives that are merely heavy camp knives ... the Campanion is a very heavy camp knife. Other heavy 5" knives weigh around 8 ounces; the Campanion is almost twice that weight. It's not just another sharpened pry bar ... maybe a better image would be "sharpened hammer."

That isn't really an accurate image either ... a sharpened hammer would be a hatchet ... the Campanion doesn't balance like a hatchet; the balance point is right at the forefinger. I don't think there's anything else like it ... it's unique.

Thanks Cougar. I'll check your review again.

I am considering the Companion as a cost-effective emergency cutting tool to keep in my Jeep. In the past, I have kept knives like an old Camillus Air Force Survival Knife, a Buck Vanguard, things like that. This would definitely be a step up in weight, but I think a big step up in capability, too. At at decent price.
