BK2 for newcommer

thanks for the answers everyone. I'm sorry i didn't realise there was a becker sub category in the forums area but i will be sure to have an extensive read. I am happy with my purchase and i eventually plan on getting the esse as well so im sure i'll find out what i like best between the two sometime this year. Firstly i need to find out what knives i can get through customs here since the prices of blades in america are around 60-70 % cheaper. Hopefully if i keep searching the net i will find something that will enlighten me about the situation.

thanks again

You should have no probs at all importing Beckers to Australia. Esee and Becker should be fine .

There are no stores in OZ that I know of that distribute the micarta scales. If I recall Ron at Urban Bunker had some in , but it took months. You can order them from the US but expect to pay more for the shipping than the scales themselves so around $80 all up if you getem on ebay ( Too expensive IMO ).

Mate, no problems with fixed blade knives as long as they have a single edge and don't have knuckle guard (trench knife) . I've bought knives with blades from 2.5" to 10.5" and only once they kept a dagger (my first online knife purchase many years ago).
In similar blade size you might also consider a Swamp Rat RMD, Scrap Yard SYCO 511. Different ergos, steel, handle material, no questions asked warranty on the knife life, both available from respective stores, and you'll find probably less than there is Beckerheads, but just as staunch fans for both brands (they're related to each other and to Busse Combat).
Not trying to take anything from BK2 or Esee 5, just letting you know of alternatives.

To help yourself with this hobby/addiction in Australian context try australianbladeforums.com.
Where in Au are you?

+1 australianbladeforums.com is a good site, although nowhere near as busy as here. I just out my hand up for a BK2 and BK9 a guy was selling there today.

I've been wondering about the Customs thing with sheath knives, especially with them cracking down on 'assisted' folders since rewriting/reinterpreting the rules on Dec 14.

Like elof_alv said, where are you in Oz?

A couple of newish online sellers down under are knives2survive.com.au and aussieknives.com.au. I've purchased from both and their service has been excellent and their prices are a lot closer to those in the US.

Also there is cuttingedgeknives.com.au, really big choice there. Prices... some are ok, some are a bit high... Some decent sales recently too.
Extract.com.au - full range of Beckers there
Do a search more pages will turn up, some shops are listed on Australian BF.
Good luck, say bye to excess cash in your future

just came across this today: knifewarehouse.com.au, really good prices on Beckers

Really good prices on most things and good service as well. They take a little longer to deliver because they special order in from the US rather than holding lots of stock, but you get close to US prices and they can get pretty much anything. I've just had three Spydercos from them and just ordered a Becker BK-11 yesterday.

Also i am interested in some micarta handles for this bad boy, does anyone have a good website to buy these from?

Back to your original question for a moment, I am looking at ordering a couple of sets of micarta handles for my BK-9 and forthcoming BK-11. Maybe we could join forces and split the postage cost. Check your Visitor Messages under your Profile.

WOW

As far as three, I guess we can thank God

As far as one ... WAAAAAAAAY TMI

And two ... you're right ! How could I have missed it !

They're both 1/4 "
They're both 1095
They're both 5"
They're both High Rockwell

Totally dissimilar ... TOTALLY ! :D

I've read in a few places of people who've owned both that say they're totally different knives. Approx size and weight were where the similarities ended.

Fight over what? people want to flame me over that so be it....wait till I review it.

I thought we were all adults after all.

Take a chill pill........
LOL usually means its tongue in cheek

To the OP Becker BK2 is a great knife and very comparable to the Esee 5 once you get Micarta on it. http://tomarskabars.com/BK-HNDL-INFO.html great place to get micarta and a supporter of the site. Gingivitis I like seeing your pics when people ask about a BK2 :)

I own both and both are very-very comparable.

the only difference between the two is a little bit of blade geometry, I have batoned with both and they both do a excellent job, they are both tuff as shit and will never brake.

The only huge noticeable difference is the handle shape.

There is nothing the ESEE 5 can do that the BK2 can't........

GingivitisKahn will you post those pics again......I think there pretty sweet.

econnofoot is trying to act cool, but its just not happening, please don't waste our time trying to explain the differences betweem the two blades.

We all know you unqualified for the task

Psyop - Im sure Tomars is great but they will charge him $40 just in postage - is a set of ( kinda rough ) Kabar micarta scales worth $80 . Not IMO.

Postage should be half or less than that. Might be worth it if he gets a knife from them too. The micarta looks cool but in practice I think the Becker grivory grip is the best.

US to Aus post is safe as anything - Ive never lost anything.

** OP - Bk2 is a cool knife BUT IMO not needed in Australia - seasoned local wood is HARD. Mind you the BK2 is built like a damn tank but anything less , your gonna damage something - just IMO.

Thanks for the info on the shipping. That seems really high! I also like the feel of the micarta , but on my BK9 I left the grivory I agree that it seems better for hard use. Not that I have had a problem with micarta just a bit more hesitant to beat on it.

Tomars are charging $30 from their ebay store to Australia and will only ship International Priority which offers tracking, insurance etc. I asked about the cheaper First Class International and received a firm, flat "No."

Out of interest bigbadboom, what would you recommend for attacking our hard wood? I was planning on giving the BK-2 and BK-9 a crack in a couple of weeks when we head out again. I'm currently without any form of suitable axe or saw but am looking for the best option to break down that firewood.

You should check out The Knife Connection. Free shipping on orders of $40 or more in the US. Shipping to Canada is $7.95 and all other countries is $18.95. That's not counting any duties or taxes you might have to pay of course.

don't you ever get tired of sharing those pics?

I like them and get a kick out of the atomic blast every time I see it. :D

To the Original Poster............. You did not waste your money on the BK-2. It is about as tough as they come and a good value.

I personally find that a folding saw and a BK2 can take care of a huge amount of work while still not weighing you down a ton. I personally picked up a Corona saw and have been pleased with it so far. Eventually I might try a silky, but as it is I am pleased for now.

A BK2 can take whatever you give it.

And here is a nasty knot that bent my War Sword (.20in thick FFG). The bend was worse before I backed it out of there a bit before the shot.

And here is the BK2 making an attempt at the same piece.

And a shot of the log after it was defeated, by the tag team that took it out.

I find it is surprisingly good at the little tasks that you would have it do. Of course it is not a mora, or a case peanut, but it manages pretty well.
