Bk2 grind mark removed picture request

There's actually good reason to sand to a mirror finish (which you should do tip to ricasso). You're putting microscratches into the steel, and as you can imagine, those can retain more moisture the bigger they are, and will thus make it easier for rust to take hold, and also there's more for the material you're cutting to grab onto and cause friction. I'd sand to at least 600 grit, and probably take it clear to 1000 or even 2500. Here's my BK2 FFG in one of the earlier stages of sanding. You can see there's still some tooling marks:

spent about an hour on it today after work. Started again at 220 and got it up to 1000 grit. (220,400,600,800,1000) All wet sanding by hand (NO POWER TOOLS). Once i got done sanding, i hit it by hand with red rubbing compound. You can easily fix your hair, or pick your teeth from this blade now. Im not sure if im going higher or not. This was so easy, i have no worries about beating on this thing and touching it later if need be. Now for some pics.

There is no sign of the grind line on the BK2 side, but theres no longer any BK2 markings either. The grind mark on the side with the BK&T Kabar logo isn't nearly as visible in person as it is in these photos. I may go at it again and try to smooth it out some more, but im going to use it like this for a while. This was seriously a piece of cake getting it to this point.

Looks like you have a nice amount of garage to work with. I think the neighbors stayed inside for 2 days while I was sanding mine. Must have looked like a mad woman on my porch area (condo complex) sanding away....muah ha ha ha!

Nice, so how's it look now?

Bocote is one of my favorite woods too. I use it pretty frequently, when I'm not using the expensive stabilized burls.

I know exactly what you mean. I come out from my garage all filthy and with a giant blade in hand, and get weird looks from the neighbors.

It's not bad, but I did it all outside on a wall in my driveway. Funny thing is there's this neighbor who always stops and talks to me when I'm outside. He always wants to know what im up to or working on. Older retired school teacher. Anyway, he walked by my house twice while I was wiping this huge blade off, he didn't even stop to say hello, just kept walking. Lol. I need to take it out with me more often.

Lethal, that looks friggin awesome. Love that mirror polish. Have been wanting to do it to mine.

Thanks bill, try it! It ended up being a lot easier then I was expecting when I started. Just wish I got rid of the grind.

I'm gonna give it a go. Need to get my hands on some additional supplies first..
