hey guys.
i made up some burlap micarta and put it on the BK17. some of you may have seen that WIP....

i planned to put that same handle on my BK2. i should have paid attention to my instructions from that other WIP thread: "make sure to shape the blade end of the handle prior to attaching the scales."

Yup. That's right. i was in a hurry, and i glued it up without shaping the blade side of the handle. ironically enough, i did shape the butt end. go figure.

hey, this is really going to look good....

orrr, is it? this is what i'm talking about. not so good.

see what i mean?

so, i plan on taking a dremel cutoff wheel to it. cut down perpendicular to the tang, but not all the way to the steel. then, come in parallel to the tang and take layers off. trying to be very careful. then, i will sand off the rest.

that sounds reasonable, but i am definitely open for suggestions. anyone ever done this? got any advice at the best way of shaping, now that is already glued up?

Carefully. That's really the only advice I can offer. Working with the Dremel, I would clamp the blade in a vice, and work slow, and take breaks to cover hand fatigue.

Good luck, brother.

I don't really have any advice per se, just would it be better to use a dremel or just a belt sander? it would take a bit longer I'm thinking but might be a bit less dangerous.

fixed the pics. whoops.

thanks moose. and psyop...ba-dum-bum. thanks, i needed a chuckle. believe me, that was my first thought...Can i leave it? :D

belt sander would be lovely if i had one. ;) i still think that the dremel might be better in this case. this will be careful detail work. well...hopefully! :D

i can't believe i did this. wow.

I would just remove them and start over, save yourself the headache of messing with them and likely not being happy with the end result. Not sure what you used for an adhesive but there are always ways to remove them. I would pop a question in the custom/maker forum for some insight.

i also thought of this. i can cut them off with a band saw and then sand the rest of the gunk off. i've done it before. but, i might as well try my best and see what i end up with. removal can be plan B.

Why are they glued to the handle ?

not sure i get your question. are you just saying that you prefer the removable handles? if so, that's fine. i like a permanent handle. if not, please clarify.

I have made the same mistake, mask the blade with tape and use a file, dermal or belt sander to round off the edge and corner as best you can. Like Moose said be careful

thanks Hunter. i appreciate the encouragement. i am kinda pissed about it. it had such potential. with that said, i am fairly confident that i can fix 'er up. we'll see.

What could possibly go wrong?!? :D

that's my problem. i'm not. i am full of confidence and empty of skill. :D

You should run for President.

Seriously though, give it a shot with the dremmel. If you screw it up too bad you can just start over, right?

Are the scales glued to the tang ? If so why would you do this ?
Best thing would be to use a chemical to remove them and start over.

throw it in the oven at 250-300F. the epoxy will soften up and you should be able to get 'em off.
Of course it might have a lousy effect on the micarta too.
Why glue 'em on anyway? they're already sized for bolts. Just countersink some holes and bolt 'em on like the factory stuff!
Then you can put 'em on any matching Becker.

When I've messed up handles I smash them off with a chisel...Just run a chisel along either the front or back of the handle material and tang and give it a good hit...I find it works well without damaging the scales or knife itself, even if really strong epoxy is used.

I know i can countersink the holes and use the factory hardware. but, as i stated above, i prefer a permanent handle.

the oven is a good idea...hadn't thought of that.

i have heard chiseling works. hopefully, i won't have to try this.

thanks for the responses guys.

More pics! I don't even know what this thread is about but we need more pictures!
