Bk2 or Garberg?

I've used the butt end to hammer in tent pegs before. That counts right? ;)
I guess… They do work as a hammer, or a tent stake, or a jack lever, or a prybar, etc. They just really suck at “knifey things”. They’re too short to chop, too thick to cut worth a damn.

I had two of em and liked looking at both but charged my tune after trying to use one. They don’t do anything well at all. Total poo pile of a knife IMO. Sold both at a loss and never missed either.

Now, if they made the same design only full flat ground and in 5/32” stock they’d be onto something…

Simply put ... if you want an all around knife ... yes other grinds will purely cut much better than a scandi gound blade. The edge on the scandi grind can be as sharp as any other, but a scandi grind "splits' many things rather than cutting them.

Don't get to hung up on grinds or brands, especially if your budget is limited. Most Moras would do at a much lower cost ... Garberg is a full tang where the kansbol or companions aren't. But you could buy several companions for the price of a Garberg.

Focus on the bushcraft skills over knife selling gimmicks.

Here is a link to a past Mora discussion that may interest you.

Get the Mora but keep the BK2. Whether you use it or not, you will miss it when it's gone.
I agree with riverside. If money and limited space aren’t an issue, keep the BK2 and get the Garberg. The Garberg is the more compact, more practical EDC option.

The Mora Eldris is a nice pocket sized fixed blade too.

I've been lusting on the Garberg more than few times but I've always held myself back coming to the conclusion that it was designed more for the bushcraft batoning survivalists. Nothing wrong with that I guess but I much prefer the classic ones for the versatility and ease of use. Need a little stronger edge? Sharpen a microbevel. Need to make firewood? I use axe.

I heard of these axes, rumor has it they're good for chopping

The Garberg is a nice knife. I honestly don’t possess the skills to get the most out of a Scandi grind, it’s fun to carve with though. The knife on the right is a Terrava 110 ( I’d butcher the full name ) - I find it much more useful for my “needs” ( utility ), about 1/2 the price of a Garberg as well. Neither of the pictured sheaths came with the knives - had to be custom ordered. If down the line you decide on a Garberg - try to get the leather sheath rig, the plastic tube is not trustworthy with regard to retention imo. The companion is definitely something anyone from a kid to seasoned bushcrafter can find potential / value / usefulness in.. there are many reasons the Mora companion is used all over the world.

* BK2 compared to a Mora - opposite ends of the spectrum ( they would pair perfectly though ). Keep the BK2.
Definitely considering getting the pukko 110 instead of the Garberg! (Also not attempting the full name haha)

Also, I can’t seem to be able to post in the selling blades for individuals section of the forum. Is it because I’m relatively new?

I have BOTH. I use BOTH. I love BOTH.

Despite that, I'ma go against the popular opinion here.

For my uses, I'd take the BK-2 all day long, and twice on Sunday.

Your mileage may vary...

Wow that’s quite the polish on the blade! That’s must have taken a while!

Have both.

Any Morakniv will be good enough for any type of activity in the forest. That said, why invest $70 to $100 in a knife when a $10 knife will do the same job?

In Brazil, there is a great idolatry for Scandinavian sharpening.

It is very controversial to bring up this subject.

For me, FFG sharpening is always preferred.

When I was a teenager, 30 years ago, I used a 14" Tramonita machete and a Pica-Fumo pocket knife (I don't know the term to use in English), a simple pocket knife without a lock, and we did everything in the forest with these two blades: cutting wood, carving, repairing fishing lines, making fire and even frying fish with the machete itself directly on the coals.

For those who collect blades, ok, have as many as you want and can afford, but for real use, any knife, combined with your skill, will be perfect.

Another vote for keeping your BK-2, it's a fantastic and iconic knife.
And the cheaper Mora's will bring you all the fun the Garberg will.
The Kansbol if it's the handle shape you're attracted to, or the Robust for the grind and sturdiness of the knife.

They all will get your bushcraft jobs done.
just practice with the knife and you'll get it to do anything you like.

Here's my Mora Robust and Kansbol and my Esee 5, the BK-2's brother from another mother. ;)

Knives were used for wood processing and food-prep in these pics.

Nice pictures! Yeah I’m definitely having second thoughts on what to do with the BK2. And this thread now has me also wanting the Pukko 110 or the Peltonen M07 as well. Maybe this was a bad idea! Haha

Also… that is a massive ferro rod! Where did you get it?

Thinking a little more on this... I do love the little Robusts to the point that I saw a really good sale a while back and bought four of them. Can't resist a good deal. But they are short. So I added a Companion HD to the collection and man is that a great knife. So I think as much as I like the Robust I do have to say the Companion HD is probably the better knife only because it has more usable blade length to work with.

Haha, just start with the cheaper Mora's, you'll be amazed for sure!
the firesteel is just an online generic one in a big size (1/2"x5" iirc) , the blue handle I did with help of a friend with a lathe.

I think the Garberg handle shape is best in class, and not being rubbery has advantages. The Kansbol is the same shape but isn't the same handle material.
