BK2 Saves a party!!!

So I took my BK2 to a bonfire party a group of people had last night that took place by a beach- I usually carry it on me when I'm not going to work or school. Anyway, the geniuses that organized the party didn't bring any wood, and expected to just find wood from the surrounding forest (which was unlikely to have happened, as most of the wood they found was too thick and wet), so I literally had to save the party by pulling my BK2 out to chop and split wood. To be honest, I rather have had the BK9 on me as the BK2 was too short to baton any of the logs we found as they were too wide. Mind you, I still managed. It chopped, split and shaved and we had a good fire going. It gave my BK2 some really nice battle scars :)

So basically, my trusty BK2 saved a party.

Now for discussion value, please tell me why the BK2 is preferred over the BK9 in a survival situation. I've now batonned with both and I definitely prefer the BK9 to do splitting and chopping, as it does a much better and easier job on bigger pieces of wood. With a lanyard around the sheath and my leg, I don't feel much carry difference.

Make a feather stick.

Carve a friction kit.

More compact, but still turns the work out.

I would take my 9 over my 2 in a spot like you were in.

But with just a 2, the party still rocked.

See what I mean?

I would have to say because it's unbreakable..... The 9 won't break easily, but back in February (I think) someone broke the tip off their 9 and someone broke the tang off their 9, where as the 2, well it's hard to break anything other than grivory on the 2....

I would rather have the 2, because it would be less likely to break.

The BK-2 seems to be indestructable. It can hammer, pry, chop, split, slice. Less blade to sharpen in a survival situation. It's still big enough to process wood. The 9 would be just fine. But if I was put in an actual survival situation, I would choose the 2. Who knows...maybe after a few months of using the 9 I'll change my mind.

From my experience in the woods and such, I would rather have the bigger knife over the smaller any day. Any job the small knife can do the big one can do as well, maybe not as easily but still do able, but the small knife wont be able to do all that the big one can. Though I have always been a big blade kind of guy, and to be fare I don't have a BK2, only a 9 and 4, though I have blades that are about the 2 in size. Just my thoughts on this, some may agree, others may call me names and jump up and down in a tantrum idk lol.

Just kidding for the most part I agree, but a 2 can do things the 9 can't do as well. Digging, prying, etc. They both have their own charm to them.

How about a nice Machax setup! :D Wouldn't that cover almost anything? Heck, you could tie the Remora to a stick for a spear if needed!

I think it be a lot more awkward to skin game with a BK9 than a BK2. A lot of people talk about chopping wood etc. But over all I think a BK2 is more versital.

Am I really the only one who prefers the BK7 to both the 2 and the 9? I mean, it's nice and compact but will still chop and cleave almost as well as the 9. Not to mention the fact that it fits the combat master sheath, which means you don’t have to get a custom sheath for it like the 9. (Not that there is anything wrong with custom sheaths. They just require a bit more work)

Other than that I think it's always great to hear stories about how a knife can save the day in even the most trivial situations. While it's usually just opening a box for someone or something equally insignificant - you got to really prove how having a good knife on you could not only be valuable but in fact imperative to the survival of the party. Good job, sir :)

Maybe if you are some silly, one-knife person then the two would be more "trustworthy". But I am used to my 9 being the primary in survival situations, which I actually go out and practice. But I usually have 3 knives. One big, one tweener sized, one small.

I don't understand the digging-with-knife compulsion.
Last time I was camping and needed to dig, I made a really hot fire and smelted of of the local ore into a hollow in a rock. Then I forged it out into a trowel with the pommel of my BK2. The extra mass of the BK2 keeps it from overheating while using it as a forging hammer. Then I used the *trowel* to dig. Voila. And the blade is still screaming sharp. (this process is hell on the coating, though).

I prefer a cell phone, flask of whiskey, and a pretty lady in a survival situation. Bk5

Wasn't it Moose that broke a 2 using it as a thrower?

No, I didn't, but I do have the pics from the guy that did.

And here is the replacement that KA-BAR sent him, for his broken knife. You heard me right, it was known that he was throwing it, stated that he was throwing it, and they still sent him a BNIB BK2, which he immediately modded, and said he would never throw again.

Everything can be destroyed, if its been made.

ive been known to carry a 9 and a 2 ,the 9 on my belt and my 2 in my pack.just for those special occasions.

Moose, those pictures are shocking and appalling. You should include a warning before posting pictures like that.

IF it were me, I'd take the 9, or a 7, and accept that it's not a pry-bar..... I'm guessing that the weight is not all that different since the 2 is .25" and the others a touch less. Still I'd rather have a 2 than most other options

That is an odd place for it to fracture. Typically a fracture would want to start somewhere that there was a stress concentration, something that would trigger the fracture to occur there. The spot in the photos appears to be through the thickest portion of the blade, and where it is smooth with no notches and such.

It is interesting though because recently there was one (a 9 I think) up for auction that was broken the exact same way.
