I tried using paint stripper on my BK2 and noting happened. How should I remove the black coating?

it should have worked...........maybe respray heavily and leave overnight.....

i did mine with paint stripper and left it until the coating got all wrinkled, then i wire brushed it off.

There are two kinds of paint stripper. The thin liquid stuff then the thick gel stuff. The thick gel works alot better. Caution - Wear thick rubber gloves when working with this stuff.

If you havent already, try using thick orange gel base paint stripper called citri-strip and leave overnight as suggested above then use 000 steel wool then you can move to 2000 grit wet/dry or higher. Hope this helps.

I have been most impressed with the coating they are now using. I think it's very smooth and durable. Once 75% is worn off with use I will strip it and give her a shine job. Not saying you should wait, just me. As said, the gel stuff works well and will remove it with an overnight soak. It worked on several other blades I have stripped. :D

Kleen Strip K3 Premium Stripper, WallMart $10. Worked great, it's a gel, left on for about 30 minuets per side and scrapped of with a scraper. Also at WallMart. Repeat twice in my case. I just took it off till it was a dull metalic grey. I kind of like it like that, but a little polishing would make a big difference if it's important. Too bad your not close I'd give it to you, there's enough in one can for 30 knives at least and most is going to go to waist as it's only good for about six months. I guess I'll have to buy more knives.

Cost me like $15 to get mine bead blasted, no hassle, less work, awesome finish.

Thick cheap stripper from Drug Mart got mine off in a few hours. I used a wire brush to get in the tight spots.

He charged me $45 to make the custom black canvas micarta handles and replace the bolt/screws with SS pins. It looks amazing. I think he chrged $15 for the thumb serations. I will have better pictures up when it returns from the custom sheathmaker and do a full review with cutting chopping ect. I will use a real camera and the one on my phone ;)

He just beadblasted a Tops Tracker and a knife made by a maker in the forums here for me too. He also reground the tops to make it a more knife like edge and less axe like and he sharpened both. He actually had to grind off the coating on the tracker first then bead blast it. Total for both altogether was $65.

I am finding it pretty convenient to have a custom knifemaker 10 miles away ;)

i never will strip mine...i like black guns (AR-15s and Glocks) as well as black knives. come on guys, if Darth Vadar carried a big bad ass blade (aside form the sabre of course) you know it would be a Becker:D

I love black I like black guns too. But tell me if you have a parkerized 1911 and the coating gets all chipped up and scratched and starts looking like ass do you keep it as is or send it off to be recoated? I have a new PARA SSP 1911 in the midnight blue or some such it looks awesome. But PARA's are infamous for their coatings going to crap and flaking off. I already see it wearing off under the slide release and thethumb safety after like 200 rounds. So I know somewhere down the road it will be sent off to be amory coated or cerakoted or some such.

See my issue with black coated knives that are users, ones that chop wood, split wood, strike firsteels ect. is that the coating starts to get scraped and gouged and crappy, pretty fast. I can't stand it. I know I am probably too OCD about it.

Now knives that are for strictly self defense that are not going to take hard abuse I have no issues with coatings.

first off, i wont own a 1911 again, im a Glock man. if your Paras finishes are going to sh*t that maybe you need a new 1911 company. 200 rounds in a Glock is a joke. ive got a Glock 17 thats NEVER been cleaned since i bought it in 1999. i oil it and put it back together. no FTE, no FTFs, it is what it is A GLOCK!. as for knives, ive TRIED to wreck my BK2, and the finish is holding on for all its worth. i have used and abused this one for at least 6 years now, and it has some serious scuffs but is nowhere needing a new coating. i treat ALL my fixed blade knives like they are strictly for self defense/survival. ive sold Chris Reeves, Ontarios, Benchmade and many more, and the Beckers are the best there is IMO. and dont get me started on my AR/M4 guns LOL

i see you've been infected by brd (black rifle disease). maybe there's also a bkd? black knife disease...or a becker knife disease!? if there is one i know i'm infected!

Well lets not have an argument here about what guns are better.

I used the gun analogy to illustrate "my issues" not to start an argument.

I bought the Para before really researching the company and learning about the problems they have with their coatings. But yet I love the gun.

But hey I don't like the coating or the grips on the gun much like on my BK2 so I will change them ;)

See I have issues if I got "serious scuffs" on my BK2 it would drive me crazy.

no harm man, sometimes when folks bring guns into a knife discussion that kinda doubles my passion LOL...... shooting and collecting firearms is my #1 hobby, and if you only could somehow squeeze dog shows in there and my head might explode!:D:D:D

Wiuld'nt bead blasting any blade(especially one in high carbon)attract rust alot easier.?

Does anyone know if you can use duct tape to mask off a portion of the blade when using citri strip? Or will it eat through the tape or bleed under? I'd like to keep the coating intact under the scales.

Thanks.

"aircraft gel stripper" sold at auto parts stores will peel the coating off no problemo - it is; however, very caustic

I stripped my BK2 in under 30 minutes with this stuff - but one drop on your skin starts burning almost immediately. Nasty stuff, read the label.
