Some time ago I read that Ethan used a sledge hammer to test those scales and they didn't break. After I heard this, I tried it on mine and no breakage. To give you a comparison about the weather conditions...I had (remember the word HAD) a Kershaw Outcast. The handle broke (the inner part of the handle was very similar to grivory, but apparently not as strong because the icy conditions cracked the handle as temps were around -50C. I have had various beckers out in similar temps and none of them have broken, not one piece of them, even when I pushed the knives to their limits.
