BK2 vs Condor Rodan

i love the look, shape and material properties of bk2. only issue is the weight. hell, it weights as much as small hatchet or semi-compact machette. some hawks are even lighter than bk2. i have a dilema if it is really that usefull to carry such a heavy and short blade when i can comfortably carry a hatchet instead. i know that knives are more universal tools, but i will pack my mora and swiss army folder anyway.
that and the price brought me to significantly lighter rodan. it seems more reasonable to pack a big knife in order to save some ounces of hatchet/machette.
on the other hand, a fat knife is better spliter than small hatchet, because hatchat cannot be batonned once it has hidden in the log and can even be broken by batoning.

so what do u think? are there other benefits of heavy knife over hatchet?

Yes,
When you are able to carry the heavy BK-2 ,I think it is a better option to take the GB wildlife hatchet or a Fiskars X7 with you.., plus a mora's ( or the Rodan if you will).

The splitting can be done with hatchets too.
I have seen guys on youtube doing that.
Ray Mears does some very well. But there are others too.
Many people underestimate the versatility of hatchets/axes.
It takes some knowledge and skill. Not that hard to learn..

I have had the Rodan and the BK-2.
The BK-2 is an impressive knife,..But the reasons why are also its downfalls. It isn't a very handy knife I would say.Too thick for its length.Heavy..
I agree with the opinions on the thick handle of the Rodan, but I found the BK-2 not having the best handle for bushcraft either.
The Rodan slices better. It's not as thick as the BK-2.

I would go for a lighter knife in this case the Rodan, plus a hatchet. You got the best of both worlds.

I say it a lot, but I'll say it again--the Rodan is the BOMB! :D:thumbup:

It is a tough kife indeed.
But the Becker-2 is also very tough .

I think if someone wants to have a knife being able to chop and not wanting to carry a large blade or a hatchet then the BK-2 is a good choice. It can chop pretty well for its size.

Personally,on a hike, I would take a mora or a Fällkniven H-1 or F1.Plus a hatchet if needed.

I like the Becker handle, the ergo is very hand friendly, comfortable. It is a little slick ,but a piece of innertube of a bike fixes that easily.

For chopping the handle is super. But like I said ,for smaller tasks ,its better to take a smaller and lighter fixed blade.
You just got better control.
I like my Kellam Wolverine for example...

Condor knives are supposed to be 56-58 RC.

It's worth noting that while the two knives have similar profiles, they're very different animals in use.

Both are great knives and anyone that tells you otherwise doesn't know how to manipulate the tool. The Becker is made of arguably the nicest factory high carbon steel in the industry. It is saber ground from .25 inch thick stock with a flat microbevel. The Rodan is made of softer 1075 steel, 3/16ths stock with a pretty strong distal taper. It is flat ground to a beautiful convex edge that is incredibly sharp and easy to maintain. Both have durable finishes and ergonomic handles. Both are very well balanced. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, or that Condor is a poor company, for there as just as much tradition and experience behind Imacasa as there is behind Kabar. They are simply different knives.

Can't say which is 'better'.

What I can say is that I too came down to the BK2 and the Rodan, I went with the Rodan. Mostly just 'cuz it was half the price. Now, I would go with the Rodan because it is a simply awesome knife.

I am not taking anything away from the Becker (I'm sure they are probably great, too), but I can say without hesitation that the Rodan is a phenomenal knife.
