The creation of the BK14 was not done in New York, Alabama, or even the USA. It was in Sweden. Yup, Sweden. When a knife nut was taking a welding class, like one knife for one reason, another knife for another.

You can imagine what happened, he made the two, into one. Thus was born, The Brat. Ethan was presented a Brat, where he took it to PWYP. Used it, liked it, then called a couple of guys, and said "We need to do this....."

So, they did. Then, they came here to BFC to name it. The final name that was settled on, was the EsKabar.

Today, I was given something I've been dreaming of, for a long time. About a year, to be exact.

I give you, the BK24 D'EsKabar, a culmination of one guys imagination, several guys decision, and a companies implementation.

Why D2? Why the hell not!!!! :D D2 is a "semi-stainless steel", in the fact that it has a high chromium content, but is still very high in carbon.

1.5% Carbon, 11.0–13.0% Chromium; additionally 0.45% Manganese, 0.030% Phosphorus, 0.030% Sulfur, 1.0% Vanadium, 0.7% Molybdenum, 0.30% Silicon

That's the makeup, pretty much.

In metallurgy, stainless steel, is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5%[1] to 11% chromium content by mass.

But, it has a high enough carbon content to still rust. Even stainless steel rusts, but its ability to resist corrosion is higher than that of carbon steel.

That, and I love D2. So does Ethan, and the reasons we enjoy D2 so much, is the work that Knife Legend and D2 Guru Bob Dozier has done with it. :D

First thing I noticed, is there is no roll stamping, that's right baby, laser etching.

Pretty much the same dimensions as the original BK14, made from 1095CV.

Yeah, the zytel handles fit just fine.

Back to the D2 topic of Semi-Stainless. According to the "numbers" D2 qualifies as a stainless steels, but only barely. Every D2 knife I own, including my Dozier customs, corrode. Rust, patina, etc. Not as fast as regular 1095, but pretty quick. My Dozier K11 patina'd rather quickly on some small game I skinned with it. My Kabar Dozier D2 went with me on a kayaking trip, rusted overnight. It just happens.

So did my new BK24.

A small amount of Ballistol and some 0000 steel wool, and that rust is a goner. Probably won't even leave a dark spot. Have no fear, teh rust won't destroy your BK24. When you get it. :D

I'm gonna do some cutting and beating tests tomorrow, in Part 2. I'm also gonna give a couple of these things away, since,

I have a few......

Like I said before, really doesn't do much for me, but, because it is something different, I'll probably end up getting one. Am wanting to see some head to head with the 1095CV.

You don't like high end steel? FINE!!!!!!

No D2 for you. I just clicked the "verboten" button on my keyboard. Now, no matter where you go, and who you talk to, you will NEVER be able to get D2.

Anywhere.

Ever.

So, there.

Mini-man.

:D

Looks nice. My queen d2 doesn't rust like that though. I couldn't even get it to patina without actually trying to force one.

Can I have one Moose? Its my birthday at the end of the week :).

But in reality, I kinda like them. Been wanting a new esky for a while and maybe (just maybe...) this might be an excuse to pick another one up... Also never had a D2 blade before.

Well, to be honest, I don't have any blades in D2. All my Becker blades, sans Remora, are 1095CV, and I'm not sure what the benefits of D2 are over 1095CV. Simple as that.

That looks great and I believe D2 in the smaller blade will prove to be a great choice. It has a lot more wear resistance, right? So you get this little guy nice and sharp and you're good to go for a while, or at least much longer than the 1095cv.

Very high abrasion resistance, which means it will take forever to go dull. If you wait until it goes dull, it will also take forever to sharpen. :D

IIRC, it can also be made quite hard, but usually in beefier tooling used to cut other metals and whatnot. I don't think the toughness potential matches the 10xx family of spring steels, but amnt looking at a comparison sheet at the moment.

Never had any D2 I am definitely interested in snagging one of these when they hit the streets :)

Looks pretty sweet, know of any plans for other D2 Beckers?

Not that I am aware of. It will depend on how well these are received if I had to guess. The San Mai BK11 was a total failure, and it took quite a bit of doing to get Kabar to risk going in on a higher end steel with these.

When will they hit the streets?

Probably March of next year, or maybe January sometime. Two of these will be hitting the streets next week though.

That's the idea. D2 has the ability to hold an edge longer, based on the heat treat. Some makers that work with D2, take the RC up real high, and you get a tough edge that holds forever, but chips out easily due to the large carbides that form. Clumps if you will. With these, I feel they will hold their edge longer than the 1095CV counterparts, and take a scary sharp edge, just as well.

My experience with D2 started with the Kabar D2 Fighting knife, loved it, but felt it was not for me, so, I sold it. Serrations, what can I say. Then, I started looking into Bob Dozier's knives. My buddy willis, has a Master Skinner, that has stayed unbelievably sharp, through a few deer carcasses. My Dozier K11 has been through a few good size hunks of meat, making stews and such, a few small critters (4-5 squirrels), and will still cleave free standing hair at the half way mark.

My Phatbob folder in D2, keeps an edge just as well.

Kabar has the heat treat down to a science on these D2 blades. Bob has his heat treat down to alchemy, maybe some arcane arts in there as well. Could be the beard trimmings he adds, who knows?

Also, any clue to the price in comparison with the BK14?

What's D2 got over S30v? I'm not saying I won't get a 24, cause I will, but I'm just wondering.

I'll definitely be picking one of these up when they are available. I had one d2 blade that has gone awol. It held and edge very well and wasn't too bad to sharpen. I think a small blade like the eskabar or even the tweeners out of d2 is perfect.
