I like fire, so, well, this is gonna be a fire contest.

Here is the list of equipment:

1 BKT knife
1 wooden match
1 firesteel
6' of paracord
1 lens (magnifying glass or fresnel or comparable)
15' of jute cord
1 cotton ball
1 mini bic lighter
1 ranger band

Contest is simple, make as many fires as you can with the material list above. You must use all natural materials, except what is listed above.

They must be fires, not coals. Fire counts as a flame at least 8" in height.

You must post 1 picture of all of the material listed above, and then, as many photos as you want, but the more detailed you entry, the more likely you will win.

You must have at least 1 friction fire, 1 match fire, 1 lens fire, and 1 lighter fire, but the more you start, the better you chances are of winning.

Must be 18yrs old to win, you are responsible for your actions, no one else is.

Beckerheads only.

Winner gets a BNIB, never used, factory fresh D2 BK24, FREE OF CHARGE.

First one to ask a question is disqualified, to enter, post "Beckerhead XXX, I accept the challenge" to enter.

Contest will run until October 12, 2012.

Fire # 1 Lighter fire

Made some shavings and put them on the ground:

FireContest001.jpg

Mini bic lit 'er up:

FireContest002.jpg

FireContest003.jpg

Cleared the "8:

FireContest004.jpg

After I took this one I added a bunch more wood.

FireContest005.jpg

End result is that I now have a fire pit...burned the grass away

FireContest006.jpg

Fire #2 Lighter fire

Started by batoning some cedar off this chunk of wood from a tree cut down last spring. Also dumped some cedar shavings on my newly made pit to start.

FireContest007.jpg

Lit a little stick and dropped it in a hole I had made in the middle:

FireContest008.jpg

We have flame!

FireContest009.jpg

Added some more wood and enjoyed the evening next to my fire:

FireContest010.jpg

Fire #3 Firesteel fire

Started by making some fat wood shavings into a bowl:

FireContest011.jpg

Went a little overboard. This fat wood is harder to make shavings from then I thought it would be. Wrist is sore. From the fat wood. ;)

FireContest012.jpg

Dumped it into some cedar bark:

FireContest013.jpg

FireContest014.jpg

Made myself a little fat wood boat:

FireContest015.jpg

Couple strikes with my 16 and she was on fire:

FireContest016.jpg

FireContest017.jpg

FireContest018.jpg

FireContest019.jpg

FireContest020.jpg

Fire #4 Lighter fire w/ cotton ball

This time I used a chunk of fir that was cut down same time as the cedar tree last spring. Batoned some thin slabs to then process further. This stuff is a dream compared to the cedar to baton:

FireContest021.jpg

Done processing. A lot of wood = big fire!

FireContest022.jpg

Made some shavings:

FireContest023.jpg

Ready to stack:

FireContest026.jpg

made a nest of sorts:

FireContest027.jpg

It ended up pretty tall!

FireContest028.jpg

Something laid and egg in my nest! Go figure....

FireContest029.jpg

....so I lit it on fire

FireContest030.jpg

FireContest031.jpg

FireContest032.jpg

FireContest033.jpg

This fire was HOT

FireContest034.jpg

Knife I used.....and the left over coals.

FireContest035.jpg

Fire #5 Lighter fire

Started with a chunk of cedar branch:

FireContest036.jpg

Made some shavings and put my 16 in the frame for this one:

FireContest037.jpg

Stacked it up and applied flame:

FireContest038.jpg

FireContest039.jpg

FireContest040.jpg

FireContest041.jpg

I stacked on a bunch more wood I processed because I hate dinky fires:

FireContest042.jpg

FireContest043.jpg

End:

FireContest044.jpg

Fire # 6 Firesteel fire

Made some more shavings....I'm getting better at these curls (and some of the cedar I batoned is drying out more):

FireContest045.jpg

I had a little fun with this one. Ain't it purdy? Fire can be an art, right?

FireContest046.jpg

FireContest047.jpg

FireContest048.jpg

FireContest049.jpg

FireContest050.jpg

FireContest051.jpg

Fire # 7 Lighter fire

I had some fun with this one as well:

FireContest052.jpg

FireContest053.jpg

FireContest054.jpg

FireContest055.jpg

FireContest056.jpg

FireContest057.jpg

FireContest058.jpg

FireContest059.jpg

Added some more wood to get it going

FireContest060.jpg

FireContest061.jpg

FireContest062.jpg

FireContest063.jpg

I had to split my posts so see post #21 on page 2 for the rest of my entry if your interested. I take a field trip.

Burn baby burn!

Here is a shot of my materials:
DSCF7809.JPG

First Fire:
I actually didn't have any place at my house where I could safely burn, and I've been collecting rocks in my yard for a while with the intention of making a fire ring, so I went ahead and built a small one.

Here I've got some maple I've had hanging out in my garage for a few months from a tree that came down in a storm:

2012-09-30_17-03-03_184.jpg

I started this fire with about 6 inches of Jute cord and my firesteel. My 5 year old was manning the camera, and didn't quite catch the entire picture:

DSCF7875.JPG

The jute takes a spark very well, and I only needed one strike from the firesteel to ignite it and set off my shavings, soon enough the fire was roaring right along:

2012-09-30_17-49-14_167.jpg

Marshmallows anyone?

2012-09-30_18-09-22_868.jpg

Second fire:

I decided this time to do a twig fire rather than split wood.

I'm using a small log as a brace with a stone sliver as a platform to keep my shavings dry as the ground was very damp after the rain.
2012-10-06_16-41-56_397.jpg

I've got a few different sized twigs ready to go:
2012-10-06_16-48-08_928.jpg

I used my match to start this one:
2012-10-06_17-09-10_616.jpg

Very nervous for a minute, shavings almost burnt out before the slightly damp twigs caught:
2012-10-06_17-09-48_469.jpg

Building it up a little more:
2012-10-06_17-13-33_709.jpg

And there we go:

I love fire!

Well; I had fun, but I didn't get all fire methods done. I forgot about the mini bic, and I didn't have good enough sun today (or the last couple weeks) to get a fire from my lens. Here is what I do have though.

Well in retrospect I should have taken pictures of my attempt to start a lens fire, but I didn't even think about that, and the sun is mostly gone behind clouds now so; yeah.

Anyways, Moose, thank you much for the good time!!!!

seriously... pyro.

Moose with that much jute and a lighter there is at least 30 + fires in that patch. I don't have that many wood piles from fence clearing to burn and the heart Dr. just told me to lay off beef. I'll sit back and drink beer and watch this one.

If anyone has a good enough question, e.g. "the list is simply what we are allowed to use to start the fires, but the fires we start to obtain the 8" flame can be any other natural material, right?" <-is an example of a not-good-enuf question, PM me and I'll throw myself upon my Bk-10.
:D

Beckerhead 301, I accept the challenge. gotta start somewhere.

Due to the issues I have not foreseen, I'll have to withdraw from the contest. Sorry 'bout that. I'll try next time.

Lens Fires
#1 Frensel lens with cotton ball - not an easy fire to get going, lots of fast smoke but I get into a rythm of moving the lens in small circles while blowing gently on it and it caught.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
#2 frensel lens with jute twine - I'd say the same technique worked for this one as the cotton ball. I fluffed out the jute, it burns pretty fast. I found that putting a small chunk of wood in amongst the cotton and jute to give me an aiming point and just keeping the heat on the wood made the cotton and jute both go up eventually. Here's a shot of the jute with the wood stick in it,

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I didn't have any luck at all getting ranger band rubber to ignite. It just burns holes and smells real bad.

Lighter Fires
#1 Lighter & Ranger Band. Lights easy and burns for a reasonable amount of time. Stinks real bad.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
#2 Lighter with wood shavings, no mystery here.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Firesteel Fires
#1 Firesteel & wood shavings. Light my fire steel struck with BK14 and then add in gradually larger pieces.

Match Fire
This is a strike anywhere match, struck on the top of an altoids tin and lighting a piece of paracord.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Here's the thing lit up, that's some lit ranger band off to the right.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Friction Fire. I'm very excited to say I accomplished this at long last, I swear I've tried to make these damn things 10 times and was never successful until this afternoon. I used a chunck of cherry from my tree in my back yard for the fire board and a piece of oak from a pallet for the bearing block and the spindles (I used 3 different ones) were misc. straight pieces I found on the ground when taking my kids out on an adventure. I'll say that I got 3 different coals today and the first 2 fell out of my tinder bundle when I was blowing on them and I was just using dried grass and some wood shavings, on the 3rd attempt I used some jute twine to catch the coal and transfer it to the tinder bundle.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
You can see the smoke coming off the coal pile if you look close.

I broke down the twine to make a small bundle and used my one handed fire steel to start the bundle. After the bundle started I put some fibers from a palm tree on the lit jute to make a bigger fire.

IMG_1724-1.jpg

I just got my Bow Drill skills up to par, so this was a nice refresher on how I need to practice more.

IMG_1726-1.jpg

Had to use my fire pit because we "adopted" a new dog and she needed to be monitored. I put the BK2 under the notch so I could contain the coal and add some punkwood if I needed. The coal formed well and I dumped it into a ball of Jute (I love this stuff, it's so easy to blow into flames.)

IMG_1727-1.jpg

Here's some shavings and the wood I used. I had a pile of it ready to go. We had a bad wind storm come through and I took out a bunch of dead limbs with the BK9 and processed these with the 2 today. I think it's mostly Oak, and maybe some Bodark.

IMG_1728-1.jpg

Firesteel fire, had to incorporate some fatwood because the pieces I chose were a bit wet for shavings.

IMG_1729-1.jpg

Match fire, same concept as the firesteel. I split the match so I had some extra shavings.

IMG_1730-1.jpg

Lighter fire, same as the ones before. I like my system, even though the wood was a bit wet it still caught well after the fatwood.

IMG_1731-1.jpg

This is the cotton ball w/ jute that I burned with the my fresnel lens. The sun was setting and it was semi cloudy. I got it to ember with a smidge of punkwood. I grabbed the camera and snapped the pic but before I knew it, the jute and cotton ball had burned to nothing. I tried to save it, but the wind picked up.

IMG_1732-1.jpg

I absolutely love anything with pine. This is some resin infused bark! I used my lighter to start the bark, and then started some shavings.

IMG_1742.jpg

I didn't like my friction fire from earlier so I made another and got pics of the coals this time!

Great contest, thanks for the chance!

Beckerhead 143, I accept the challenge!

This was a really fun day! Thanks for the contest.

I chose the Machax for this contest because Ethan designed the Machax to do it all. Since I haven't messed with mine much I decided to break it in right. All of my knife needs were met my the Machax.

The required materials.

thestuff.jpg

Lets get started!

pyro.jpg

First up was a fresnal lens with Cedar bark. The ember formed fast and was ready to blow into flame in no time.

CLense.jpg

Another lens fire this time with dried fern and Birch bark.

fernlense1.jpg

It took off easily once the Birch bark lit.

fernlense2.jpg

I took the one match and use it three times. First I split it in two and used both pieces for a fire each.

Fire #1
splitmatch1.jpg

Fire #2
splitmatch2.jpg

Then I took the match sticks with some jute twine and Birch bark and hit it with the lens for the third fire.

lensematch1.jpg

lensematch2.jpg

I used the 6 feet of para cord to string up a bow drill set. The Machax did ok to make this kit. Was it ideal? No. Did it work? Yes.

I really wanted this fire after failing at the NE Gathering a few weeks back. This time I used Cedar for the spindle and the hearth with a cedar birds nest.

Drillset1.jpg

drillset2.jpg

Drillset3.jpg

Since that was successful I tried the same setup with a jute twine birds nest.

drilljute1.jpg

drilljute2.jpg

That wore me out!

Ferro rod with Cedar bark

Birchferro1.jpg

Birchferro2.jpg

Next I took some Pine pitch and a little bit of jute twine and made a little torch. Ignited it with a ferro rod.

jutepitch1.jpg

jutepitch2.jpg

I found this really fluffy grass seed while in the woods the other day. Mixed it with dried pine needles and hit it with a ferro rod.

It took off like a rocket.

grassseedferro1.jpg

grassseedferro2.jpg

Ferro rod, cotton ball, and fatwood. Very easy.

Cottonfatwood1.jpg

Cottonfatwod2.jpg

Ferro rod, milkweed fluff and dried fern.

milkweedfernferro.jpg

This is were it got weird for me, With the mini Bic I could have made a truckload of fires. However I only made a few.

Mini Bic and half of the ranger band,

rangerlighter.jpg

Mini Bic, Old man's beard, fern and cedar shavings.

oldmansbeardlighter.jpg

Used up the rest of my Jute twine for this one. I could have rationed the jute twine out to last longer but what the heck.

Jutelighter.jpg

Lighter with the other half of the ranger band, Birch bark, cedar, bark and whatever I had left. Burn!

PYRO!

Once again thanks Moose and good luck to everyone else.
