-----This is a continuation of my first post-----
Fire # 8 Lighter fire
For this fire I took a field trip up the dungeness river here in the olympic national park in washington state. It's about an hour drive from where I live. Below is one side of the river valley:
I brought some fat wood with me and it lit right up!
And just before leaving I doused some water on it and washed the rocks off. Leave no trace....
Fire # 9 Lighter fire
Fire # 10 Firesteel fire
Slapped on new liners that mrn8 made for me. They rock BTW:
Fire # 11 Firesteel fire
I'm missing friction fires and the fresnel lens fires so my entry won't count. I've been dealing with some health issues last two weeks (got strep throat and it won't seem to go away) and my doc put me on bed rest. I mostly listened (by making a bunch of fires, going hiking, and working
) I made a bow drill set and today tried to break it in but it was just too much and I got real dizzy so I gave up (boohoo I know, I know).
I also put off making the lens fire and there has been no sun for the last 3 days here in WA so that was a bust as well. I'm starting to see how in a survival situtation it's good to have multiple options because one method will not always work because of all sorts of different variables. Sickness, injury, weather, setting are all constantly in flux...
I built a fire almost every night for 2 weeks so I at least wanted to post what I had done to share with you guys. I love this stuff and it's a lot of fun for me. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy though. All I know is that I'd always rather be outside.
This contest pretty much saved me from insanity since I've been stuck at home sick watching TV all day so thanks to all that made it possible. I had fun, learned some new stuff, and am excited for whatever is next!
Here are some pic's of my failed bow drill attempt today. I didn't even bore it down enough to notch it but almost had a surface coal (tons of smoke). This fire kit has some hope yet....:
